Why do I feel warm/hot when waking just before palpitations start?

Hi there,

I woke at 2.30 am feeling very warm, and slightly clammy. I sat up and could feel my heart starting to go faster and pounding. I was really worried but tried to calm myself. I immediately went to the bathroom and wiped a cold flannel over my face neck and body about 3 times and then it started to slow down. I also had some water.

I find this always seems to happen in the early hours. I had read that cold water can sometimes help with this. I know that as I am going through the menopause this could be linked. I am going to a cardiology appointment in a couple of weeks.

Does anyone else find they feel warm/hot on waking and then get a fast heartrate?

it sounds like you are having a nocturnal hot flush . The blood rushes to the surface of the skin so your heart goes faster to make sure enough goes to your vital organs. Could there also be a bit of anxiety in there ? Waking with your heart pounding for 30-40 seconds is an anxiety favourite. If you add second fear ( oh my god what’s this!) add more adrenalin to the party it goes on longer . Obviously get yourself checked out and maybe ask the question on a diet such as Menopause Matters if you are in the UK and they will be better able to help you.. This site is for atrial fibrillation. Try not to worry and I hope you feel better soon

Thanks for your reply, yes you could be right about the night flush thing. I am seeing a cardiologist about possible arrythmia soon as well so hope to find out more then.
