Ablation

I have been advised to get ablation due to having palpatations and been administered with Adenisine 3 times. I am not on any medication but am worried ablation may make my symptoms worse. Can anyone advise if they have had this done and was it successful?

I'm afraid I've never heard of Adenosine being used for atrial fibrillation (AF) so can't really help. How long have you had AF and are you on any tablet form of medication to help prevent an attack?

Thanks for your reply. Adenosine is an injection which is given to reset the heart, not pleasant. I was put on a betablocker but it slowed down my heart too much.

I've had 3 ablations and still have constant AF. Fortunately my heart rate doesn't go very high now and usually flits between 60-90bpm. I believe a change in my diet, cutting out consuming anything with artificial additives has really helped.

I declined an ablation for 15 years as I was so worried and made my decision when myself and my husband were in opposite beds in the cardiac ward, him with a heart attack me with SVT . Honestly it has been the best thing I have had done . I had it done in Leeds. That was 5 years ago. Never had an SVT since. I used to get about 6 episodes a month , in and out of an and e .

Hope this helps good luck, kind regards ,

Ursula

Hi yes I had that problem and was taken to hospital in Austria but I must say they were wonderful it was them that introduced me into drinking 3 full glasses of ice cold water quickly one after another when my SVT started and yes it worked. It seems to shock the heart back into rhythm , my A/E hadn’t heard of it . I was born in Austria so could speak the language but they sent me home with all my bloods translated into English and a full report for my doctor so if you holiday in Austria 😉you will I am sure be well looked after x

I noticed your reference to drinking ice cold water to counter palpitations. The reason it apparently works is because it stimulates the vagus nerve. I noticed this Q&A online (eu.detroitnews.com/story/li.... For another non-drug technique, the Valsalva Manouver, also see webmd.com/heart-disease/atr.... I've had occasional palpitations in recent years and am taking a low dose of bisoprolol. It was only at my review that the cardiology nurse told me about these techniques, which seem to work. I think that practitioners should mention them early on in consultations. I would be interested to hear if anyone has found these techniques useful. Best Wishes.

Hi, yes the water trick is great but I found the Valsalva Manoeuvre, if this is the pressing on the vagus nerve it did not work for me when my doctor tried it and to be honest it hurt when he was pressing on my neck. They tried the.. laying flat on my back, lifting my feet up in the air and then quickly lifting my head up to the sitting position, this worked once, all the best.

I was given adenosine to show up my atrial flutter. It was an odd feeling, to put it mildly. I had ablation for the AFl in 2019 but AF and multiple palpitations are now a part of life.

When you say "palpitations" does this include AF or just ectopic beats (i.e. premature ventricular contractions, PVCs and atrial PACs)?

Yeah adenosine is not great.

I have undergone 3 ablations. The most recent being last August. To address slow afib since childhood. Each ablation went well. Previous two sustained sinus rhythm for a duration. Then slow afib returned. So far, so good with this one. No symptoms. Back to full routines of exertion. Take daily does of rhythmol & xarelto. Pace-maker implant may be in future.

Third time lucky. Hopefully you won't need a pacemaker. Good luck.

I had a successful ablation for SVT 5 years ago, complete success after the 3 month blocking period in which your heart recovers & adjusts! I also had Bradycardia which meant I needed a Pacemaker too. There are always risks with any procedure BUT success rates with Ablation seem very good! Adenosine became a love hate relationship in the months before my Ablation 💓😭 ,never needed it since. I do take Bisoprolol betablocker to slow my heart a bit as well! My ablation was done under sedation & although awake the 3 hours just flew by! Best wishes on your own journey.

Hi all. Just joined. After years of arrythmia ( ectopic heart beats evidently ! ) I started to experience fibulation. Because of that I had an ablation two years ago. All was peachy until about six weeks ago when, overnight, my arrythmia returned with a vengeance and almost constant. Sometimes every other heart beat is erratic. As I'm on Rivoraxaban ( blood thinner ) I am not allowed to take Atenalol ( betablocker ) which used to help, although it did slow me down.My cardiac surgeon, GP and even A and E say it's all harmless dispite the fact it's uncomfortable, especially ly at night.

I'm wondering if someone else has had a similar experience?
