Dompiradone after 60

Iv`e been reading about deaths in people after taking Dompiradone, & apparantly the risk is greatest in people over 60 years old. I would order some over the internet in readiness for norovirus season, but now I`m scared to use it because I`m 62. Why is this drug more dangerous for people over 60?, & is there a safer alternative?

Why is it more dangerous? because it has a side effect potentially linked to people with cardiac conditions and diseases, and presumably as you are posting in an arrythmia forum you are a sufferer. And of course if you are over 60 you are more likely to have undiagnosed heart challenges which is why it is contraindicated for those,

Personally I would avoid it as all costs, alternatives? ask your pharmacist for something to take. But norovirus? hopefully that's a very rare occurence to anyone.

Be well

I only have a mild type of arrythmia called ectopic beats, & occasional palpitations, which don`t impact on my life very much. Iv`e had various tests which showed no actual disease, so I`m wondering if this means that I`m ok to take Dompiradone. Iv`e had it before without any problems.

Given the warnings, I would not, but of course it is your choice.

hi their buying over the internet i'd think twice unless you know where your getting them from many counter fit drugs so be aware have you seen you doctor first take care hope this help bigalan

I agree with the other posters. I would NOT buy a drug over the internet and I would NOT take a drug if there is a stated contra-indication no matter how small the risk.

Ultimately if something happened to you, your family would have no come back against the drug company.....particularly if something less final happened to you such as stroke, heart attack etc. and you became disabled and needed financial compensation.

Why not wait and see if you get this virus rather than worrying about it now. Your GP could then make the call, and decide whether to prescribe or not. This would be a more sensible way to proceed and would protect you better should you suffer an adverse event.

You could check this drug out via a website called rxisk.org which lists all reported side effects of medications.

Iv`e used this drug before, so I can`t see how it can suddenly become dangerous, especially as I was already past 60 when I used it.

Hi there - domperidone causes a very specific heart rhythm abnormality of the QT wave in some people. The longer you take it and the more associated risks you have the higher the chance of this abnormality which can cause death. It won't just cause random heart problems willynilly, there's a specific type of problem and specific things that increase the likelihood. I used domperidone for two years because my primary condition causes extreme vomiting, and there were no quibbles about it as my quality of life outweighed the possible risk. However using it for the winter viruses is another matter. While I understand vomiting is unpleasant you really don't need a medicine of that magnitude for a virus, and you would be preventing your body from expelling the virus. Also, no offence, but buying tablets online is the worst most foolish idea I've ever heard.

I was actually taken off one Domperidone at night yesterday by my GP. after taking it for several years due to vomiting with IBS but have also two strokes and had two heart attacks plus stents fitted. He told me it was bad or the heart and ineffective, and it is. Has given me an alternative to take 3 times a day. My son read the contraindications and told me it "could" cause blood clots, and to be aware if you have family history of heart complaints, Can't give you the name because first stroke damaged my optic nerve and I also have ARMD so cannot read the leaflet. Now I cannot decide whether or not to take it. My father died after 6 strokes and paternal grandmother died of heart attack and my dad's sister of COPD (which I have also and take a lot of meds for ) and something wrong with her heart. In UK they are prescription only and I would NEVER by neds from the internet, not even for my dog. Has anyone been offered a replacement by their GP and if so, can you give me the name so I can see if it is the same as mine at a later date when I can get my son to give me the name of the new pill? It would be very much appreciate. Regards, Val.
