Sugar Free Challenge - Saturday

Today is the day I'm going to be asking for help. I'm usually quite whole-foody and low sugar during the week, but over lockdown, Saturday has become our treat day.

Once a week, we pull an idea out of a hat and enjoy it on Saturday or Sunday (depending on other plans). We've had Italian night, afternoon tea, cinema night, cocktail night and so on. It was fine when we thought this pandemic would be a short lived thing, but now it's become a habit, and a sugarry one at that, so today my brain is expecting a treat.

I really want to see your ideas for things we can cook or enjoy, that still feel special, instead.

I'll share a sugar free ice lolly recipe in return :)

That all sounds delicious! This isn't really a sweet treat but we have pizza nights. I make my own pizza bases (can use stoneground wholemeal flour but I've never made the bases with gluten free flour). I just add dried yeast, olive oil and water. Then I make a tomato base by cooking down red onions, tomatoes, olive oil and herbs. Then whatever topping you like. I often do a tray bake of med veg then use this as a topping with some cheese and more olive oil. Much cheaper than a take away pizza and I know there is no added sugar 😀

Pizza nights are good :) I think we have very similar tastes for topping!

That's a shame it didn't work out.

I promised a recipe for some fruity ice lollies today:

2 cups of frozen fruit of choice (mango, mixed berries)

1 can coconut milk

Mix the ingredients in a blender until smooth, then pour into moulds (I got 11 ice lollies out of this) and freeze for at least 4 hours.

It gives a relatively low sugar treat for a summer's day :)

I made a similar thing last summer, but without freezing it afterwards.

That reminds me a lot of Chia jam, it sounds nice!

Thanks.

The chia seeds are not essential; I was inspired by Jamie Oliver (though would use cream if I made it again, and certainly no honey!)

Lollies do sound good !

I live with my 3 young adult sons, and over lockdowns our “ Treat Day” is often Monday as that’s the day none of us usually work. I pre-cook something in a big pot like a curry or chilli, the boys have it with rice etc I leave out the starchy carbs, and we have rediscovered a love of board or card games. A sweet treat has crept into this scenario but last week, 1st day of the sugar free challenge, I had a bowl of strawberries with a little cream while they ate their ice creams and it was delicious so I didnt feel deprived. Don’t know if anything like that appeals to you?
