I'm due for open-heart surgery, replacement of two valves and repair of one, I want to be in the very best condition i can for a better recovery, important particularly as I am in my eighties, though fitter than many and used to buzzing around and being useful within the extended family. My recent blood test shows a cholesterol reading of 6.1 and I understand I need to get this down to 5, advice on best ways to do this without being miserable would be greatly appreciated by this food lover!
Has anyone here been in the same position and how did you deal with it?

I’m guessing that you are a female, in which case having a total cholesterol level of 6.1 is not particularly high, cholesterol levels go up naturally after the menopause. Whether or not cholesterol levels matter remains very debatable, not being overweight or having high blood pressure may be more important.
Modern research suggest that eating sugar and refined carbohydrates affect cholesterol levels badly, as well as many other health conditions, so it’s a good idea to cut them out. Basing your meals around vegetables seems to be a good idea.
There is a Cholesterol support group on HU which may be useful to you. Good luck with the surgery.
