Which cholesterol is high ?

Is it Total cholesterol or LDL or Triglyceride is high ?

Your dietary cholesterol only contributes 10-15% of total cholesterol. Your liver produces much more cholesterol. So You need not have to worry about your total cholesterol numbers as long as your HDL is above 60 mg/dLand Triglyceride is less than 100 mg/dL.

Your doctor may try to put you on a Statin if your LDL is higher than 130 mg/DL or or triglyceride more than 150mg/dL or HDL is less than 60. Please consult your doctor and take informed decision.

Here there are lots of posts on role of cholesterol- good and bad. There are posts available on cholesterol reducing diets/ foods.

You may like to go through the posts which would be useful.

May God bless you !

Thanks for your comments. I don’t know which cholesterol is high they just gave me the total. I feel I must contact the doctor and ask for the exclamation as I don’t really want to go on statins if they suggest it I would rather try to lower it myself.

Hi Loudwater

Welcome to the Healthy eating forum. There is some information about cholesterol in the NHS choices website, that you might find helpful:

Hi Loudwater

That's why I think it's good to talk things through with your healthcare provider - so you can get an informed opinion.

I saw an article yesterday which looked quite helpful - and does mention diet - so maybe have a look at this as well - but to be honest, the more you read, the more confusing it can sometimes be - and the doctor will be able to advise you, so you can make an informed choice about your medical care:

I was told the same recently. I walk everywhere. I do like chocolate and some rubbish so I'm trying to cut this down.

Your total cholesterol value has no diagnostic value. What's your hdl/triglycerides ratio?

What do you consider a healthy diet? Most people are eating far too much bread, rice and pasta and far too little fat. This dietary pattern is associated with raised triglycerides and lowered hdl. Doctors tend to focus on ldl, but it has little predictive value, and can't even be measured accurately.

High cholesterol levels have been wrongly interpreted since very long.True that high cholesterol levels are not good but it's not the culprit / villain but a fireman. High cholesterol suggest there is high wear n tear in your body, the reasons may be smoking, metabolic syndrome, diabetes etc.To reduce levels of cholesterol one must control the factors causing high wear n tear.

Increasingly remove fish meat and dairy from your diet and your cholesterol should drop because they are the only foods that contain dietary cholesterol. Plant foods contain zero. Some people have to remove oils as well to get their cholesterol down.

If you are serious about reducing cholesterol, that's the way. Take the change slow and steady, learn what works for you.
