5 a day challenge to members πŸ₯¦πŸ‰πŸŽπŸ₯‘πŸ‡

Good morning everyone,

We are going to have some challenges to help encourage members to eat well and achieve optimum fitness. This challenge will be followed up by a poll to see how you do over there next month.

I portion of fruit, veg or fruit fruit juice is approx 80g or 3 oz or 80ml of fruit juice so its quite easy to eat 5 a day. I had a poached egg on toasted home made bread with baby plum toms and organic mushrooms and I have around 100g of each so I've already had 2 to 2 1/2 portions, I'll probably have salad with my lunch adding another 2 portions so by my evening meal I'l have had 4+ portions so know that I'll easily achieve my 5 today.

Here's a link to the NHS live well 5 a day page:

Hi Hidden

Wow, such a lovely colourful photo of all those lovely vegetables. I will definitely try to achieve the 5 a day, and I've had a good start to the day already with my breakfast.

Wishing everyone a great Sunday and hope the week ahead is a good one.

Zest :-)

Hey thanks Zest I saw your amazing breakfast this morning and that inspired me, as I’ve been meaning to post this challenge for a few days.

I expect you like many others will achieve your 5 a day as we are a bunch of healthy eating foodies...

Very colourful Jerry. What do you have in your picture Jerry?

in reply to Veeee

Hey thanks Veeee it’s a farmhouse vegetable soup with chick peas. 😊

What an excellent challenge Jerry and your pot looks awesome.

I've just had one portion so far today as I had red pepper in my homemade bread sandwich at lunch time.

I'm not sure what I've having to eat tonight but I do struggle with fruit and vegetables because of IBS, I just need to get out there and source some different vegetables that aren't high in Fodmaps. I've got an appointment with a Dietician on Tuesday and I'm looking forward to that as I know the Fodmap list has changed somewhat so I should be able to obtain the latest information.

I do love my vegetables but tend to avoid fruit as it doesn't like my tummy.

With this challenge it will make me focus more on what I'm eating so I do like the challenge.

Thank you

Alicia :)

Thank you Alicia, I bet your sandwich with home baked bread and peppers was very tasty.

Poor you as I’m sure you’d love to indulge in some plant based meals. I feel for you with IBS as I really struggled before being diagnosed with coeliac, it all becomes counter productive like a catch 22 situation.

If you are better with low fructose fruit like strawberries I’d have thought a few strawberries with almond cream would be lush and hopefully tolerable for you.

Good luck Alicia as you deserve it πŸ™

Thank you Jerry and it was lovely thank you, spelt flour has quite a different taste but a good one.

I love most fruit and vegetables and I used to have a post of some raw vegetables and fruit every day at work but can not longer eat that. I kind of know what I can and cannot eat but have a Dietician's appointment on Tuesday to go on the Low Fodmap diet and then I should be able to find out what I can and cannot eat by keeping a rigorous food diary.

Think I'll try some strawberries when they are in season and I know I'll be okay with Almond Cream as I have the milk and I'm fine with that.

Thank you Jerry for your sentiments.

Alicia :)

Hey good for you Hidden as you are well on your way to your daily 5. Apple sauce and poached eggs is an interesting combo. 😊

It’s looks delicious, my sort of preferred meal, but Doctors tell us that we need to eat offal to have a rounded diet, thoughts please

in reply to Tudee

Hello Tudee and thank you, offal can be a rich source of vitamins and minerals, offal is also high in cholesterol and saturated fat so I expect Dr’s would recommend moderate consumption.

Now what is important with offal is how the animal has been raised as a healthy organically fed pasture raised animal will have much healthier offal than those that are bred in a factory farm as these animals could well have unhealthy levels of fat in their offal.

My personal opinion is that we have access to so much healthy food that we don’t need offal and definitely not offal from stressed factory farmed animals.

These are my thoughts.

I agree, but was puzzled by the opinions of those pushing the virtues of foods once eaten because they were the cheapest cuts especially after the war.

in reply to Tudee

Now post WW2 resources were low and we didn't have factory farms or battery chickens so their organs were much healthier whereas stress and factory conditions are bad for the animals vital organs. This is my take on this. 😊

Offal is nutrient dense and definitely worth eating, but people are unused to handling and preparing these foods nowadays.

True Penel,

I remember eating roast heart, also liver and kidneys as a child, post war, then it became infra dig to eat those body parts.

excellent challenge Jerry, I will join in, I need a bit of a push, have been rather lazy due to working hours/stress over Christmas period. I have only had an orange and a banana today so not so good :(

in reply to sunny369

Hey that’s not a lot to eat in a day sunny369 you want to look after yourself so good luck with the challenge.

I love green and black beluga lentils as they have a great texture and taste. 😊
