I will definitely check it out when I get the time, I've added it to my list on Netflix.

It's interesting what Schwarzenegger was saying about marketing - I was thinking about marketing on my walk to work this morning, and how america defines what "a man" must buy (big cars, guns, lots of meat). It's funny that the subject has come up twice in my day!

It turned out to be a short documentary, so I squeezed it in while baking a cake for work this evening :)

It's an interesting documentary, they had a couple of studies on fat in the blood stream, cholesterol, and interviewing lots of athletes who found their performance improved on a whole foods diet.

They have a few guys who talked about their diet before going plant based, and I couldn't help noticing they were all about protein, regardless of the source before (e.g. fried chicken). It doesn't surprise me that they noticed an improvement from going whole food from a junk food diet! I found my inflammation markers went down just from cutting out processed foods, which is why that bit stood out.

I do think nutrition isn't a one size fits all scenario, and I'm glad to see these guys found something that works better for their body needs.

There's been a big rise in the amount of processed vegan food appearing on our shelves, and I would also love to see the effects that these have on the results compared to 100% whole foods.

Thank you kindly, Cooper27, for taking time to note your perspective on film. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Agreed, rise in quantity of โ€œprocessed vegan foodsโ€ that appear on our shelves isnโ€™t necessarily a good thing โ€” especially in comparison to 100% whole foods.

I think of faux โ€˜veganโ€™ foods (โ€˜plant-basedโ€™ cheeses, meats, etc.) serving merely as โ€œtransition foodsโ€ for people trying to wean off animal foods & are having difficulty (understandably) doing so. Unfortunately, I suspect these โ€˜faux foodsโ€™ can do โ€˜more harm than goodโ€™ if they become a permanent fixture in someoneโ€™s diet rather than serving as a mere short-term (temporary) bridge ๐ŸŒ‰ toward 100% whole foods. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿ˜ž

[Thinking of it as one of those โ€œthe road to hell ๐Ÿ”ฅ is paved with good intentions ๐Ÿ‘ผโ€ type of thing. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ]

Oh well . . . guess this is just one of those things we learn along the way in โ€˜the school of hard knocksโ€™ ๐Ÿ˜ฃ๐Ÿ”จ . . . ๐Ÿ˜–๐Ÿ”จ . . . ๐Ÿ™ƒ๐Ÿ”จ

๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

.

[Perhaps itโ€™s like a heroine ๐Ÿ’‰ addict trying to wean off heroine by substituting methadone ๐Ÿ’Š instead? ๐Ÿค” . . . Resulting in merely swapping 1 addiction for another? ๐Ÿค”. . . That is, creating an equally vicious cycle โ™ป๏ธ of trying to wean off (addictive) methadone after weaning off (addictive) heroine? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ ]

Donโ€™t know whatโ€™s a reasonable workaround for such tough, recalcitrant โ€œaddictionsโ€ (food addictions. drug addictions, or any type of addiction) especially if cold turkey ๐Ÿฅถ ๐Ÿฆƒ proves extremely difficult (โ€˜impossibleโ€™?) for us. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

[In meantime, whole new offshoot (market) of pricey ๐Ÿ’ฐ faux (heavily processed/ refined) โ€˜veganโ€™ foods is created under guise of being โ€˜healthyโ€™? ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿคญ . . . (โ€œRobbing Peter to pay Paulโ€œ? ๐Ÿค” ๐Ÿ˜ณ ) . . . Just another means of companies (excessively) profiting ๐Ÿ’ฐ from high-priced, highly processed/ refined, highly addictive foods under the guise (marketing) of โ€œgood healthโ€? ๐Ÿ™ƒ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ . . . Merely swapping 1 addiction for another โ€” swapping 1 profit-making product for another? ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ ]

Hopefully ๐Ÿคž enough food savvy health โ€˜expertsโ€™ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€โš•๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿซ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŒพ raise awareness of these pitfalls ๐Ÿ•ณ , so newbies, innocents, & the misguided/ misinformed avoid tripping into these types of hard-to-crawl-out-of holes ๐Ÿ•ณ ๐Ÿ•ณ ๐Ÿ•ณ . . . ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿคญ

Sticking with ๐Ÿ’ฏ% whole foods (as close as possible) is a goal ๐Ÿฅ… โ€” an ideal ๐ŸŒˆ ๐Ÿ˜‡ ๐ŸŒŸ .

.

Agreed. I, too, suspect โ€œnutrition isn't a one size fits all scenarioโ€. Think when weโ€™re tackling particular health conditions, we learn to tweak โ€˜n tailor our unique needs & tolerances to suit our circumstances. We โ€œfigure it outโ€ along the way. (We learn ๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐ŸŽ“ ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿซ what works & doesnโ€™t work for us. And, learn to adjust/ modify as we go along โ€” as our circumstances evolve.)

Yet, a guiding principle of ๐Ÿ’ฏ% whole foods remains (& appears to be) an agreed upon ๐Ÿค guiding light โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒžโญ๏ธ๐Ÿ’ก ๐Ÿ•ฏ ๐Ÿ”†๐Ÿ”… amongst numerous dietary โ€˜philosophiesโ€˜.

Have found T. His work seems to be (remain) a steady, consistent lighthouse โญ๏ธ of weโ€™ll-rounded experience/ knowledge that serves as a beacon of accuracy/โ€˜truthโ€™ โš–๏ธ . Iโ€™m glad you pointed that out about whole foods and processed vegan foods.

Whole foods would be a lot better for your health and performance rather than eating processed vegan foods all the time.

I thought this when vegan foods were soaring,I was thinking โ€œAlthough vegan foods are healthier I bet there are some ingredients added that are not good for youโ€... and I was right.

Processed foods from ASDA are typically chock full of sugar, salt, various chemicals and carcinogens which are bad for your health.

Processed vegan foods typically cut out the chemicals and carcinogens but you will likely find vegetable oils and rapeseed oils which can be bad for your health.

If you go to a shop and buy some oat milk itโ€™ll probably contain rapeseed oil, unless it is organic.

But if you make your own homemade oat milk, you donโ€™t add rapeseed oil to it, thatโ€™s ridiculous.

I know you have said the oil is to give you a frothy coffee but the way I see it, people donโ€™t need a frothy coffee. People just need coffee that tastes nice and is good for your health. So in my view, get rid of the rapeseed oil.

Itโ€™s like with chocolate bars bought from ASDA, look at the ingredients and it likely has soya lecithin in it.

Now if you made your own homemade choc you wouldnโ€™t be adding soya lecithin in it would you?

My friend is on a mission, she is very close to selling her own vegan milk at the moment.

It is a totally organic, fair trade (when possible) milk that comes in a glass bottle.

She does another oat flavour with added cashew nuts to make it creamier. Naturally creamier rather than adding rapeseed oil which is no way natural.

Anyhow, she is going through all the fluff with trading standards and so on and then she will be selling her own organic milk. Mykind is what she is calling the milk.

So when you were saying you would love to see the results on processed vegan foods compared to whole foods, I think whole foods would be better to eat rather than processed vegan foods.

What I found interesting in Game Changers is that the roman athletes were all vegetarian and one big heavyweight lifter was saying that he gets asked how how he became as strong as an Ox without eating meat and he answers by saying โ€œHave you ever seen an Ox eat meat?โ€

Spot on, Matt2584! ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ˜Œ

As merely 2 samples of ingredients (oils) from 2 โ€˜plant-basedโ€™ burgers:

. . . ๐Ÿ” Beyond Burger: Water, Pea Protein Isolate* (18%), Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Flavouring, Smoke Flavouring, Stabilisers - Cellulose, Methylcellulose, Gum Arabic, Potato Starch, Maltodextrin, Yeast Extract, Salt, Sunflower Oil, Dried Yeast, Antioxidants - Ascorbic Acid, Acetic Acid, Colour - Beetroot Red, Modified Corn Starch, Apple Extract, Lemon Juice Concentrate, *Peas are Legumes ( tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/p... ).

[Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil are the 3rd & 4th ingredient listed, respectively, & Sunflower Oil appears farther down the list. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ ]

.

. . . ๐Ÿ” Impossible Burger: Water, Soy Protein Concentrate, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavors, 2% or less of: Potato Protein, Methylcellulose, Yeast Extract, Cultured Dextrose, Food Starch Modified, Soy Leghemoglobin, Salt, Soy Protein Isolate, Mixed Tocopherols (Vitamin E), Zinc Gluconate, Thiamine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B1), Sodium Ascorbate (Vitamin C), Niacin, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Riboflavin (Vitamin B2), Vitamin B12. ( faq.impossiblefoods.com/hc/... ).

[Coconut Oil & Sunflower Oil are the 3rd & 4th ingredient listed, respectively. ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ ]

.

Yes, serving as short-term โ€™transitionโ€™ foods, these faux meats ๐Ÿ” may serve a purpose of helping break long-term โ€™food (meat) addictionsโ€™ for individuals trying to โ€˜break an addictive cycle โ™ป๏ธ/ unwanted habitโ€™.

Yet, consuming a routine, steady diet of these โ€˜plant-basedโ€™ burgers (or faux meat substitutes), I suspect is problematic โ€” particularly as youโ€™ve noted, Matt2584, with health-damaging oils being an ingredient: Rapeseed Oil, Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil โ˜ ๏ธ โ˜ ๏ธ โ˜ ๏ธ . . . ๐Ÿ˜ฏ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ

Perhaps these types of faux meats might be viewed as brief, temporary, bridging" to get over the hump of โ€˜meat-withdrawalโ€™? ๐Ÿค”

But, a steady diet of these temporary bridging foods may be just as unhealthy as a steady diet of the โ€˜animal meatโ€™ theyโ€™re intended to imitate? ๐Ÿค”

My goodness Kaufman, he is more emotionally naked than Woody Allen. How special to work in the media, be part of creating the narrative yet deconstructing it all at once. Very postmodern! Concerning Game changers, it definitely felt like it was one for converting the guys to veganism, especially with working around male stereotypes on meat and muscle, the blood and swearing and emphasis on American sports.... I suppose that is more glamorous and inspirational than the average ecologically aware, middle aged housewife with an auto-immune disease!!!! I'm just glad the message is getting out.

Spot on with โ€˜Game Changersโ€™. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘. . . I wish ๐Ÿ™ โœจ just โ€™sticking with factsโ€™ ( healthunlocked.com/healthye... ) was โ€˜good enoughโ€™ to encourage people (athletes/ non-athletes, men/ women, young/ old, โ€ฆ ) to consider migrating to โ€˜ whole foodsโ€™ & consider reducing ๐Ÿ“‰ (or even eliminating ๐Ÿšซ ) junk foods, heavily processed foods, & animal foods from their daily consumption.

Unfortunate that โ€™just the factsโ€™ arenโ€™t good enough & a lot of "stereotypes on meat and muscle, the blood and swearing and emphasis on American sports" are used (required?) to inspire folks to explore whole foods. ๐Ÿ˜ณ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ . . . Yet, I guess that type/ style of approach of movie-making ๐ŸŽฅ ๐ŸŽž โœ๏ธ does spark interest ๐Ÿ’ฅ ๐Ÿค” from folks (who may otherwise be disinterested in such dietary concerns) & to begin questioning what theyโ€™re putting in their mouths at each meal & how food affects their โ€˜performanceโ€™ (as well as overall, long-term health). ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘ . . . I guess if famous athletes ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ โ›น๏ธโ€โ™‚๏ธ & movie stars ๐ŸŽฅ โญ๏ธ ๐ŸŒŸ inspire us โ€˜regular peopleโ€™ to examine ๐Ÿ”Ž what weโ€™re putting in our mouths ๐Ÿ‘„ multiple times a day, thatโ€™s a good thing. โ˜บ๏ธ ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ€ ๐ŸŒบ ๐ŸŒž

Schwarzenegger talking marketing, he may have been referring to meat only there, and he is right in what he says, but marketing/lobbying is used with many many products.

Marketing/lobbying is basically lying to the public in order to sell their products. Itโ€™s all about making money.

Some of the things I have said when referring to Aspartame, I and others would say it can be dangerous but you will find information out there that says Aspartame is completely safe... again marketing/lobbying.

There is information about the main ingredient in weedkiller Round Up being a notable carcinogen but you will also find info saying that is safe to... again Marketing/lobbying.

These corps lie in order to sell their goods regardless of what can happen to peoplesโ€™ health.

There's quite a difficulty when it comes to food, as it's stuff we've been eating for millennia (or believe people have been eating for millennia).

For the most part, we started going wrong when scientists got a bit too involved (in my opinion at least) - making food in a lab, pesticides, fertilisers, dietary advice. When you need money to fund the scientists, & ultimately the companies they work for, that's when things go wrong.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Cooper27

I think itโ€™s more a difficulty of greed really.

Scientists and these companies and so on ruin the place and peopleโ€™s health in order to make money... and what is money at the end of the day?... material.... money is pretty much worthless. As I say itโ€™s about as useful as a used sock.

When you next go to ASDA or wherever, pass over a sock to the cashier and they wonโ€™t accept it.

That is because they are brainwashed into thinking that money is an importance.... or is it because they could take it but they wouldnโ€™t be able to use it cos nobody would take it when they try to buy something.

It is the system that we are stuck in that is the problem.

Hi,

I would also like to add to what Kai was saying about plant based foods.

I used to have a terrible junk food diet when I was little and in 96 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour and had a second one in 98.

When growing up I slowly came away from the very sugary diet I had and I now eat more plant based foods. Not completely plant based, I am a flexitarian and lean toward more fruit an veg than meat.

Like with most people with brain injuries, I suffered from frequent headaches and this was while my diet was sugary still.

Ever since I started eating more plant based I hardly ever get headaches and when/and if I do get headaches, I would rather inhale frankincense essential oil whenever I like rather than swallow paracetamols where I can only take a set amount each day otherwise I could make myself unwell or even have an overdose.

Also, like people with brain injuries, fatigue is a big problem.

I used to get fatigued but again my plant based diet has helped a lot and also frankincense essential oil has helped out a lot :).

Your obviously more sensitive to sugar n items that are used in fast food cooking? I rarely eat fast food, too expensive n greasy. I have changed my way of eating, if I eat something off the list, it's portion controled.

Matt2584 profile image
Matt2584 in reply to Want2BHappy3

Well, I donโ€™t know if I am more sensitive to sugar but probably more addicted to refined sugar... well WAS.

Refined sugar is addictive.

Youโ€™ve heard โ€œA moment on the lips, a lifetime on the hipsโ€ Iโ€™m sure. Well that rings true for most people. And although that quote may be referring to cakes, I like to think it refers to most sugary foods.

You eat something sugary, you canโ€™t stop eating it or find it hard to reject.

I came away from sugar pretty slowly at first but once I read that sugar has been compared to cocaine as it is addictive stuff and can cause health problems as well as obesity then I pretty much dropped it like it was hot.

I was not exactly an obese person but according to my Body Mass Index I was considered overweight... even though some people saw me as skinny.... but those are just compliments.

I saw myself as a chunky monkey :).

So I eat a lot less sugary foods now and more fruit and veg and have lost a lot of weight according to some friends.

Processed foods, sugary and savoury, condiments, medicines and fast foods all use refined sugar and to me refined sugar is the enemy.

Hi kai,

I would also like to see this documentary and I would prefer to see it for free as well.

I have had a look around for freebies but you likely wonโ€™t find it or you will have to dig deep.

These days itโ€™s all about money and a lot of these services that provide online movies/tv shows to stream for free are being โ€œlegallyโ€ closed meaning a lot of people have to pay.

If I manage to find a freebie (good luck with that one) I shall post it.

I think that a documentary such as game changers is not only an eye opener but also very important for the people to know about and therefore it should not be pay-to-watch it should be free.

Cooper27 profile image
Cooper27Administrator in reply to Matt2584

It may well become free once the documentary makers make their money back on it. It costs a lot to pull these shows together properly, so they really can't be published free if it will make the documentarian bankrupt.

Matt2584 profile image

I can understand the makers of the documentary making money from it but when these services/websites close down because of virgin media has closed it down, then there is a problem. Virgin media earn billions. They donโ€™t need us to be paying even further. We, the people, have to pay through the nose for too much while people like Richard Branson (vile creature that he is) evades taxes.

Whoever closes these sites doesnโ€™t really matter, the thing is we have to pay even more than usual.

We pay for the internet, isnโ€™t that enough?

Makes me laugh when people say you can download things like images for free... you need an internet connection which you must pay for.

Cooper27 profile image

Utilities are expensive to get to people's doors, the amount you pay for that covers cables, maintenance, staff costs, upgrading the network, buildings etc. It doesn't leave enough money in the pot to make everything on the internet free as well...

I have seen it. My favourite part is when they compare meat to cigarettes. I was laughing at the "experts" who said smoking is safe and doesn't cause diseases. Made me wonder if we will do the same about meat in the future. Is worth watching, a bit preachy at times. Time will tell...

Thank you kindly for sharing you view, Idkwhattodo123. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ˜Œ

Yes, it is funny when we look back in time into the not-so-distant past, where "experts" put โ€˜on the recordโ€™ that "smoking ๐Ÿšฌ is safe and doesn't cause diseases."๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคช . . .

[How many lives did those experts derail by falsely reassuring smokers ๐Ÿšฌ that their habit was okay๐Ÿ‘Œ โ€” in their โ€˜expertโ€™ opinion?! (What a tragedy ๐ŸŽญ . The unnecessary suffering, shortened lives, & grieving loved ones . . . all because ๐Ÿšฌ was pronounced (& promoted) as being "safe." ๐Ÿคฏ ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ )]

Yes, a current parallel appears to be the consumption (over consumption) of animal products ๐Ÿง€ ๐Ÿฅš ๐Ÿณ ๐Ÿฅ“ ๐Ÿฅฉ ๐Ÿ— ๐Ÿ– ๐ŸŒญ ๐Ÿ” ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿจ ๐Ÿฆ ๐Ÿฅ› in our modern day โ€” particularly as promoted by incessant โ€˜marketing/ advertisementsโ€™ bought & paid for by industries (that grow/ profit ๐Ÿ’ฐ from overconsumption ๐Ÿค‘ ).

Have been revisiting the explanations of T. Colin Campbell & strongly suspect Dr. (PhD) Campbellโ€™s โ€™wholisticโ€™ explanations are closer to reality, accuracy, โ€™truthโ€™ than other many other โ€˜expertsโ€™. [Merely my laymanโ€™s opinion.]

If interested, these free ๐Ÿ†“ videos* may be of interest. Although long (1+ hour), Dr. Campbellโ€™s perspective โ€˜make senseโ€™ in the depth & breadth of historical, medical, & scientific context.

[Therefore, the length of the explanations/ videos canโ€™t necessarily be summed up in a snappy "sound bite" ๐Ÿ’ฌ that appeals to flitting attention spans ๐Ÿ™„ or that require heated emotion ๐Ÿ˜ก or โ€˜drummed upโ€™ ๐Ÿฅ conflict to engage viewers attention. Nor is there typical, unsubstantiated arguments that appeal to viewers who feel compelled to โ€˜take sides" โš”๏ธ . . . ๐Ÿคผโ€โ™‚๏ธ . . . ๐Ÿฅด๐Ÿ’ฅ๐ŸฅŠ . . . or to dig in their heels ๐Ÿ‘  ๐Ÿ‘  even further . . . . . ๐Ÿ˜‚ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿ™ƒ . . . Instead, the lengthy, thoughtful explanations require careful, patient, attentive listening ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘‚ in order to grasp the depth & nuance of the concepts discussed. (Iโ€™ve had to listen/ re-listen to segments (multiple times) to comprehend the paradigm-shifting concepts being conveyed.) It is a โ€˜shift in paradigmโ€™ from what many of us had been taught in our โ€™school daysโ€™ โ€” and even what we currently are awash in (brainwashed in ๐Ÿง  ๐Ÿงผ ๐Ÿงฝ ) from relentless, ubiquitous marketing โ€” paid for & promoted by those who profit ๐Ÿค‘ at the expense of our health.)]

I was listening to some of Joe Rogan podcast on a long car journey, and this week they've been discussing/rebutting some of the info in the game changers:

No worries, Cooper27. ๐Ÿ˜„ ๐Ÿ˜‚ . . . Joe Rogan appears to use the megaphone ๐Ÿ—ฏ ๐Ÿ“ฃ of his popular platform to explore his โ€˜popโ€™ views ( skeptoid.com/blog/2014/02/0... , reddit.com/r/videos/comment... , theatlantic.com/entertainme... ) amongst his huge, pop-culture audience of like-minded(?) followers. [Donโ€™t think he (or Chris Kresser podcasts.joerogan.net/podca... ) will be "sitting at the same table" of dietary/ nutrition/ science/ medical folks [such as a T. I was meaning because Joe Rogan is a wrestler, so he gave some good insight into the work required to prep for a fight (there was a big wrestling section in the Game Changers). Chris Kresser explained how humans produce B12 themselves but that it is created in the hind gut, which is beyon the point we can then absorb it, so we poo it out. To absorb the B12, we'd apparently need to then eat our output ๐Ÿ™ˆ it was interesting to hear that.

I watched the videos shared, they were interesting, but I don't know whether they cleared anythin up for me. I do think Chris Kresser is quite highly regarded amongst his community though, so while he might not sit at the same table as Esselstyn, ornish & co, he seems to be similarly respected from what I've seen.

Finally got around to watching the Game Changers last night on our Netflix subscription. Fascinating stories of plant food diet enhancing performance in high end athletes.

This is the second programme Iโ€™ve watched on a vegan diet, the first being Forks over Knives, another fascinating watch also on Netflix.

I became vegan about 5 months ago after a coronary bypass with the ambition of avoiding further heart problems, which are very invasive, and hopefully avoid cancer in whatever guise I might be susceptible to. I believe these are two issues that a vegan diet is widely believed to help with.

Heart health ๐Ÿ’— & keeping proliferation of cancer cells โ˜„๏ธ โ€˜at bayโ€™ are just 2 of the systemic improvements a WFPB/ โ€˜Veganโ€™ diet is purported to help us with. ๐Ÿ™ ๐Ÿ˜Œ
