Is it ok to eat the same thing everyday?

Hi all , my friend seems to think that her husband is not healthy because he eats bacon eveyday.

He easts either bacon, spinach, tomartos and mushrooms or eggs bacon and mushrooms. But has Bacon every day 2 slices. He buys local grass fed bacon from a local organic grass fed farmer.

He eats plenty of veg throagh the day and eats small amounts of veg too. And hes a healthy weight and at his last blood check his cholesterol levels were fine , his blood pressure is fine too. He doesn't drink or have takaways or processed food either.

Is it unhealth for him to eat bacon everyday?

I dont think it is because he has a healthy varied diet.

That's a difficult one, I was going to say yes it's unhealthy and he needs to vary his diet but after re-reading your post I'm not sure, I'm a very fussy eater and I only eat plain English food, but i try not to eat the same thing twice in the same week

Sounds just fine to me.

I eat a very monotonous diet also, and it's very similar to what he's eating (meat + vegetables). I eat pretty much the same four or five meals on rotation. Oddly, I don't get sick of it. In fact I still enjoy my meals immensely even though I know it's the same thing I had yesterday!

I have a theory that people only crave variety when they're eating bad or inadequate food - I can still remember when I was eating a "healthy" low-fat diet, I was endlessly thinking "what shall I have for lunch/dinner today?".

As for bacon specifically, I've done a fair amount of research on the subject and I can honestly say the superstitions about bacon are nothing more than that: superstition. There probably is a nutritional difference between cheap supermarket bacon that's made from PSE meat and pumped up with phosphates and water, but if you're buying the good stuff, there's no theoretical reason to believe it might be bad for you, and no evidence that it actually is. Your husband's weight/lipid profile would seem to bear that out.

Thanks, hes not my husbands hes a friends hubby. I agree i eat salmon and veg 5x a week and never get bored. I eat mostly the same and like you never get bored. I also dont believe those who say bacon is unhealthy either.

For me, the only reason eating the same thing every day isn't good for you, is if it means you aren't eating enough variety of foods, so not getting the range of nutrients you need. If every other meal is providing the variety needed, then it should be fine.

There are some concerns about nitrates when exposed to high heat (which would also come from roasted carrots, beetroot, celery). If it's nitrate free bacon, then that's not a concern.

Yes its nitrate free bacon. He eats a varaity of vegtables , fish, other meats ect.

Dear BMDmom,

A difficult one- on the one hand a Varied Diet is Best however, on the other, he is Healthy eats Organic food, eats vegetables....On balance I would, I think, say that he IS eating, clearly enjoying it and IS seemingly healthy, so if that's what he enjoys...…..

These 'Things' are ALWAYS difficult, the Toddler who will only eat Cream Crackers, The Pensioner 'obsessed' with Pizza, The 'Healthy Eater' who will only eat Organic garlic- five times a day. The Cross-Country Runner, who consumes Five steaks a day. ALL apparently 'Healthy' and 'Doing' well.

I might be tempted to, VERY occasionally, suggest trying 'Boiled Bacon' instead of Rashers- as a first step. If, and it may very well be a big 'If', he agrees then, again VERY carefully, suggest first Pork.....Then a Different meat. If he refuses, point blank, and/or accuses you of Interfering then let him have his BACON, he clearly likes it. There is a, VERY FINE, 'Line' between being Caring and apparently 'Dictating'- be sure, to stay, on the Right Side of it.

Sending you both MY best wishes,

AndrewT

But why?

Nutritionists: "Bacon is bad for you. Salt is bad for you. Fat is bad for you. Red meat is bad for you. Everything is bad for you. Ahhhhhahahaha!"

Us: "So what can we eat then?"

Nutritionists: "Boiled chicken breast!"

Problem is, boiled chicken breast has virtually nothing in it except protein. The water that you boiled it in carries away most of the micronutrients (including sodium and potassium), and you've missed out on some others by discarding the fat. In fact you'd probably start craving "variety".

I've mentioned this before: there was an experiment done some time ago where the "scientists" decided to feed the subjects nothing but boiled lean turkey. They believed (erroneously) that this constituted a "low carb diet". Unsurprisingly, everyone became very ill and/or dropped out in a matter of days. These highly-qualified nutritionists were completely unaware that humans cannot use protein as a source of energy without a certain amount of either carbs or fat as an adjunct.

Nutritionists take delight in ignoring the Prime Directive: if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I have a fat, protein, carb source with every meal. I even eat certain things the same most days , i have salmon 5x a week as im not much of a meat eater but i only like salmon , all other fishes make me sick. But i change it up i may have , wild rice or butternut squash or sweet potato ect with the same. I eat chicken nearly everyday but i have a big serving of kale with it and other salad and i drizzle coconut oil over as my fat source.

2 slices of quality bacon isn`t that much, if I were younger I would like that myself. Good idea to eat a variety of foods, vegies etc. I have found that I can substitute coconut oil with good results for cooking or flavor.
