I went for a walk this morning and spotted this moorhen walking on the water Lilly leaves and she was oblivious of me as they are normally shy and quickly go for cover, it's a beautiful sunny morning and a complete contrast to yesterdays wind and rain.
A moorhen has a red and yellow beak which sets it apart from a coot.
I have probably Confused, these two birds, for years so thanks Jerry.
I was on Holiday once and, around their lake, were two Very unusual Birds. They were 'Fairly Big' Birds, with pink-y/ orange-y/ Magnetar-y plumage. Finally I found someone to ask "Are they a Similar Size, to a goose?" I was asked. I said that "Yes they probably are, thinking about it" "They are Egyptian Geese, so called because of the 'Upward' Markings- around the eyes". DO try and see, these birds, they are Beautiful.
Have you actually ever, really LOOKED at, even Common Birds? The Male Mallard, for example, is lovely as are Pheasants- both male and female. Starlings, Blackbirds, Robins, even Sparrows are a treat....If you Look! Were we used to live, we had a Long hedge, I spotted Greenfinches one year. Nature IS Amazing....Spiders Webs, on damp mornings, Sun Rises and Sun Sets....Find a Spot were you can see the Moon clearly and LOOK. Look at, the DETAIL, in leaves, flowers, stems a 'simple' blade of grass. Don't just Scoff, that apple, at record speed....Gently wash, the fruit, then dry before 'Polishing' it- on a cloth, or your trousers. Take time, to notice, it's beauty....What colours are a banana? Did you say green, brown, black, ochre and yellow- Sometimes with dark spots? If NOT you haven't been looking! Perhaps, have a 'stab', at drawing, sketching or painting what you see?
Invest in either 'Danish', 'Linseed' or 'Groundnut' oil and rub some onto some, very ordinary looking, wood....How did 'that' happen? Varnish some, again 'Ordinary' garden stones. Look into the Eyes, of your Partner (Maybe NOT if you have just Burnt, or Dropped, the Sunday Roast mind.) and just 'See' him/ her- yes you are Right, that IS why you married.
As I said above- Look Around, Take Time and SEE, our Beautiful Colourful World!
Hi Andrew, I'm not a twitcher but love birds and want to know what they are so I pay a lot of attention to detail as I like to be aware of what's going on around me
If you want to see how observant you are sit and study a simple leaf carefully and then see the subtle difference in its neighbouring ones on the same plant. I use Danish oil on my worktops so agree there.
As for being happily married I'm very pleased for you as I am happily divorced. π
Hi Jerry
What a lovely photo and you can't beat wildlife, it's so calming and relaxing.
