I've always thought of myself s reasonably healthy, but at age 65 I want to look at ways of boosting my health, feeling really fit and keeping a better eye on my diet. I recently gave up alcohol and do not smoke ... but want to work on optimum fitness - interested especially in how diet can help with this.

Just starting with a healthier life
Hi Brydon2018 ,
Welcome to the Healthy eating forum. I realise you have specific aims, and so I would suggest having a look around the 'search' facility (top right hand side) and then you can find previous posts which match your interests more closely - there are also other health unlocked forums where fitness is a focus - e.g. Strength & Flex forum for example, and there are others which focus on running (Couch to 5k etc) - so there are lots of interesting forums out there with fitness as a focus.
The NHS Choices website (which this Healthy eating forum is linked to) has some information pages on Healthy eating, and they are here:

I am sure you will get more replies, but I just wanted to give you this information as a starting point, and wish you a great week.

p.s. I can see you've already made some positive changes for your health, and I would like to wish you continued success with all your goals.
Sadly, the only way to get fit is to exercise a lot, and it gets harder as we get older!
Aerobic fitness at your age is the single most important predictor of longevity and quality-of-life. Diet helps, and certainly giving up cigarettes will make a huge difference, but basically it's all about spending time in the gym
Do you think there are any specific aspects of your diet that need attention?
Hi Brydon2018, well done for joining us and you will get lots of healthy eating tips on here we have a section on healthy eating and exercise as they go hand in hand for our well being.
Also well done for giving up smoking and I do not drink alcohol as it makes me ill so I know how healthy avoiding that can be.
So good luck and any specific queries or questions then you just ask away.
Jerry. 😊
What kinds of foods are you used to? Fresh generally or processed? Do you cook yourself?
Fresh whenever possible, as so much processed food contains so much salt and other chemicals - I cook myself and for my disabled partner
One of the people I follow on youtube is Logan Blake who has a masters in Nutritional Science. One of his latest videos is about why he is eating more fruit and more raw food.

His argument being this is the best platform healthy exercise based on the principal that the body needs plenty of water (which fruit & veg have), plenty of carbs (which fruit & veg have), plenty of protein (which fruit & veg have), and so forth. He goes into how the body recovers far better from exercise when eating more fruit and veg than when eating dairy, meat etc.
This is a guy who, amongst other things, dead lifts around 500 lb so he knows a thing or two about exercise.
