Really need to get serious about some much needed improvement in areas of; lowering cholesterol, weight loss and fitness.
Was told to try lower cholesterol by diet or double the dose of medication.
While I do not want to increase the statins, I lack consistency in sticking to a diet and succomb to the family get togethers with good food that is not really good but tastes delicious.
Need motivation and dilligence to turn it all around, but not relishing the challenge.
I was given statins but had too many side effects so discontinued them, So for me it is eating healthy 6 out of the 7 days taking it one step at a time. There is not a quick fix but don't think of it as a diet but a healthy eating plan. Have you looked at the blood pressure site they have some useful information, as do the heart uk site. I have added the links below. There are lots of lovely recipes on the slimming world facebook groups and they are delicious even my husband likes them and he is a fussy eater.
Cutting your carbs is the way to go and to help improve your health. Cut out/down on the main 5 - bread, pasta, rice, cereal and potatoes. You will see a difference in just a week, on the scales and in your measurements.
The idea of this diet is that you stick to 800 cals per day, mostly protein, however I have not counted calories and am sure I have gone over daily. I also messed up at the weekend (wine) but I still lost 5lbs in 5 days. Give it a go, you have nothing to lose but the weight.
Cholesterol cannot be affected by diet, that is what l was told by my doctor, it is familial in that it is nature not nurture, so it is in your genes. Unless of course one eats a lot of really unhealthy fatty foods then that is going to affect general health as well as levels of fat in the blood. I do not truly believe in statins. The only people who benefit are BigPharma. They also gave me bad side effects, pain my muscles etc., so l stopped taking them.
I lost weight recently, I decided to join Slimming World as my sister had lost weight with them. First weigh in was a shock, the heaviest I've ever been by far, but lost between 1 and 3lbs a week, 2.5 stone gone now, it is a supportive environment and overall the plan is healthy and easy to follow. Some things I don't agree with but you can do it your own way to a certain extent.
My partner lost a lot of weight too, just by eating the healthier meals, he's come off statins, also his blood pressure much lower and in healthy range. We eat lean protein with every meal, lots of veg in everything, eggs, pulses, beans of all kinds (you have to get creative). Nearly all meals cooked from scratch, quite large and filling, not many processed foods. We've cut back on pasta, rice, bread, not as many potatoes, also a big thing was cutting down on alcohol by not having any when we are at home on our own, still have some with friends and family at weekends, you have to live!
I didn't think we would be able to do it at the beginning, but we will carry on with the new lifestyle. So many benefits of losing weight, much fitter and less tired, no aches and pains, an interest in clothes shopping again. Hoping to be able to maintain our weight..... so far, so good....
I would read up about healthy eating as much as possible, lots on here, exercise does help, but for weight loss success, it's mostly about food and drink.
