Hi there. I am new to this so firstly thank you for giving me this opportunity. I am retired, 60 years of age. Suffer with arthritis in my hands and in great need of a health kick. So any help would be gratefully appreciated.

I always thought the basic advice to shop the edges of the store rather than the middle is good advice. Produce, meat, dairy, eggs, real cheese, aka- real food. The processed stuff in the middle is just not good! Of course that means more time in the kitchen.

Personally, I am working on eliminating gluten, and thus most grain products. Lots of people have reported that their joints feel much better when gluten is removed, and I am experiencing that myself. (I am 63 and getting big knuckles!)

Thank you for replying with your advice.. Gluten free never crossed my mind but yes I will give it a go, I don't tend to buy much processed foods mainly fresh as I love to cook. If you can advice on gluten free products I would be grateful. Thanks again

I haven't really tried much stuff labeled gluten free. So far, I've just pretty much eliminated flour products from my diet. The last time I went shopping, I bought 4 different gluten free flours to try out for coating chicken, fish, whatever. I really don't know much about how they act yet, but the almond meal adds crunch, and I love almonds anyway. I tried a bag of flour that has honestly a nauseating flavor. It's made of flour from potatoes, sorghum, garbanzo beans, and others. I'll be throwing it out! I was trying to do a crunchy topping on a green bean casserole, and it didn't brown and get crunchy like I thought it would in the oven, and it tasted horrid. I've thought about joining some celiac forum that might have recipe advice somewhere.

Yes I agree with you. They say that 60 is the new 50. So I would like to think so , that's why I too have started to look at healthier eating and a bit more exercise. I have bought Rosemary Conley new fitness and healthy eating book called 3-2-1. I have done the shopping bit and my start date I have planned is18th Jan. Wish me luck!

Hi Fiona, I was just wondering how you got on with the Rosemary Conley 3-2-1 book?  I have just bought it after realising I really need to do something about my diet. I have put on a stone in the last couple of months and my back, hips and legs are suffering because of it. I'm having heart and thyroid tests done but the longer I leave it before changing my diet the more weight I will need to get off. I hope you are doing well.

Like your picture with the sea behind - lovely place to exercise. I too turned 60 last birthday, and sad to say have regained the weight that I successfully lost for my 50th birthday! There have been a lot of changes in this decade but we now have to plan for an exciting and enjoyable future and we need to be healthy for that, so I am calorie counting and reading these forums for motivation. I too have a plump little dog who is crying out for some longer walks so we must put on our wellies and get out there! Best of luck.
