Magnesium for pain.

I experience a lot of pain daily, some days worse than others. I have declined painkillers as my situation is long-term and I have tried to manage my pain in other ways. However, my GP decided to put me on a high blood pressure medication after a series of high readings. I tried to discuss other ways to reduce blood pressure and asked about using natural remedies, for blood pressure and pain. This was not welcomed. I was significantly concerned about ignoring medical advice, so I do take the medication. I recently had a yoga session, the guy teaching us was knowledgeable about brain injury, neuropathy, pain etc... we discussed pain and numbness, burning and tingling. Magnesium came up and he suggested that it may help. I bought a reputable supplement. I took into consideration that we get some magnesium from diet and water and that I do take blood pressure meds. I bought a supplement of 150mg strength, the recommended safe dose for adults can be up to 400mg daily. I started the supplement today. I took my blood pressure tablet tonight as usual. I feel a bit strange. I wonder is it anxiety or is it really not a good thing to be doing? I feel very calm, more tired than usual. I am sensitive to meds in general since my brain injury, usually needing less of things than before. I don't drink alcohol, have a fairly good diet and a poor sleep pattern because of pain, muscle spasms and tinnitus. The magnesium dose is a low one, should I persevere to see if it does alleviate some of my pain? Advice would be welcomed.

Hi Deborah, you should really talk to your GP before starting supplements, but from what you say they me be less than empathetic, so have a chat with a pharmacist, they understand the interactions of medication and supplements. Your yoga teacher may know a lot of stuff about a lot of things, but he may not be medically qualified to advise what is safe for you to take. Many over the counter supplements are costly at best, but can impact on your natural equilibrium at worst, have a chat with someone qualified.

Thank you, I think you are right. That is what bothers me about meds.
