Travel insurance awaiting cranioplasty

Hi

I think I know the answer to this but….. as my husband is still waiting on a date for cranioplasty with no sign of any date soon (waiting 15 months) I was hoping we could have a little break, maybe a cruise. We all really need it. Has anyone managed to get cover whilst awaiting for a cranioplasty?

Hi Lunalgg. My experience has been that travel insurance providers will not even consider insuring you if you’re waiting for any tests or procedures

Hello,

I don’t think you’ll be able to get insurance for anything relating to his condition while waiting for a procedure but you will probably be able to get insurance for other medical health if you’re prepared to accept exclusions for that specific condition (which I appreciate may not seem worth it).

At one point we managed to get Staysure insurance to cover my husband’s condition for a single week in Canaries for £400 but then as soon as my husband was scheduled for radiosurgery they wouldn’t even do that. The price was so high anyway that didn’t feel worth it.

We chose to take a risk and had holidays in Europe for 10 years without cover for his specific condition. But we had general medical cover for everything else and were were in the EU so felt state hospitals would cover emergency, but didn’t go further afield than Europe. I knew I’d have to sell the house if he needed emergency flight home - so it is a risk but we had three youngish kids and didn’t want to spend our lives with no travel.

Cruises would be the most expensive holiday if something went wrong as they’d have to get him via helicopter so if you are thinking of taking a risk and travelling then I’d definitely avoid a cruise as you could be faced with a huge legal bill if it caused delays to the passengers etc

Thank you for your response. It’s a new world to navigate. Yes, I guess it is too much of a risk. We have children too and it will be our second year of no travel. Once the operation is complete and if all goes well will we still struggle to get travel insurance? He has no other major health conditions other than the traumatic brain injury. Will the TBI still be classed as a condition?

The term 'condition' is really subjective to be honest. But you probably will need to declare it. Otherwise if you need to claim they might just say you didn't tell them. My own experience of travel insurance is similar to those replies above. But some insurers will cover you for everything else provided you agree to exclude anything connected with the BI. Good luck with finding what you need and enjoy your holiday.

Book something really luxurious in Britain? The Scilly Islands?
