Any Suggestions Please

I had a brain aneurysm, sub achranoid hemorage and stroke one after the other about 2 years ago. After being on a life support machine at St. Georges for three weeks and then a further week at St Peters I was discharged thankfully. I was very blessed to be able to walk talk and do nearly everything I used to; but having Fibromyalgia this got worse

I went back to work being a carer for dementia residents 2 weeks later. I have struggled but have managed eat first doing about 10 doubles and now singles and doubles. I get a lot of pain down my body despite taking medication and suffer from some memory loss especially when under stress.

My Managers don't seem to understand and are just looking for ways to ship me out whilst I really love my work and want to continue. I asked for set days but this is not accommodated and I get very confused as well.

Any suggestions to help me get some help at work as the HouseKeeping Manager seems to be in charge of everything and is making my life difficult as I cants keep up with continuous changes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't have long to retire and would love to continue till that point. I feel totally useless and sometimes wish I never survived. Don't get me wrong I know how lucky I am to have survived and have the capabilities I still have but people do not appear to have the understanding or patience and since I feel I am not quick enough now in thought or physically I am treated as an eject.

Thank You

Yvette

Hello Yvette, and welcome to our group where you can find lots of support and answers. You sound very much like I was my aneurysm was operated on a couple of times but has always been unpredictable and has continued to grow. I like you was in the care sector, I was due to have more coils fitted when my aneurysm ruptured, while I was walking the dog back from work I had been preparing a care plan for a new admission, anyway I hit the ground and my dog saved my life, by attracting attention , I was behind parked cars on a very cold January afternoon. I was expected to survive or have catastrophic injuries but I believe I have a guardian angel watching over me, as I recovered well and returned to work after three months. I tried reduced hours s a senior, but my poor memory made me feel that was quite difficult, so I went back on the floor which I enjoyed, but still struggled with exhaustion and head pain, I even tried domestic, but difficulties were the same. Then I found out my aneurysm was so big it was pressing on my brain stem and causing tias, so I eventually went off sick and stayed that way until they retired me on medical grounds, but I had support from HR, and my manager, can you not get this, maybe you should go to citizen advice for support as disabled advise is important you are entitled, please let us know as an employee you are entitled to certain rights please check these out, I was a similar age to you. Take care love Alice xx

Hi Yvette and welcome! Happy New Year. As Ali says, this group is such a great source of support. Sorry to hear what you’ve been and are going through and that your fibromyalgia has been made worse as a result. That must be so difficult for you on top of everything. I totally get where you’re coming from re work and you deserve better treatment after what you’ve been through. Unfortunately what you’re experiencing is far too common. You were back at work so quickly which is brill on the one hand but on the other, it means you’re trying to deal with all manner of recovery going on in your brain and body as well as trying to get back into work mode which as you’ve discovered is extremely challenging and frustrating - plus others don’t ‘see’ anything wrong as you look ‘normal’ on the outside and most people really don’t get brain injury and its effects unless they’ve experienced it.

My best advice is to contact Headway the brain injury charity, who run this forum, as soon as possible- they are probably back open 2nd January office hours.

0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk

headway.org.uk

As well as a very good listening ear, they will have advice on how to deal with your employers and or put you in touch with those that can help.

Well done for reaching out and be kind to yourself, even when those around you aren’t. I hope you find a way around the problems at work as you deserve to be treated more fairly than you are!

Take care, best wishes for as healthy a future as possible.
