husband : more surgery

My husband is still in unconcious after a TBI. He has been responding to pain but today starting responding abnormally. They took him for a brain scan and found fluid (not sure if blood or csf) and now want to take him to theatre again and do a procedure to alleviate the pressure. This will hopefully allow the brain to move a bit more over which may have been impacting consciousness

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I don't have experience of this Lunalg but, here on the forum, I often hear of the procedures for relieving pressure. Some are fairly straightforward but others need tweaks and adjustments of the technology 'til the process is working as it should.

Your husband may be fitted with a shunt to release the pressure and control the flow of CSF but, which ever course the surgeons opt for, will be in his best possible interest.

Hi LunalgI don't gave personal experience- have you talked to the people at headway? They may know about resources and supports in your area...the number is under the pinned post on the right... and they likely can direct you to more info...

Sometimes it's good to reach out to local supports as well as us.

It's such a difficult time and of course you would naturally feel overwhelmed and not sure where to turn.

I'm so sorry things are rough for you and your lived ones just now.

The medical people really are trying their best for him, they often aren't great at the relative support bit... I sometimes think those capable of providing such help have a certain mind set to be able to what they do and that means they are not so good at some other aspects..so you need to find separate support people for you - and Headway ought to be able to help with that.

Good morning. My partner had extensive control of pressure in her head which was post surgery and involved what is called an "ICP bolt" being fitted to her skull. This is basically a wire that enters the skull through a very small hole and monitors pressure inside the head electrically. Swelling which was causing pressure with the brain against the skull (there were also 2 bleeds not involved in the craniotomy which removed the life threatening bleed) was then constantly adjusted through medication, mostly BP related. Induced coma was maintained until the surgeons felt this swelling and associated pressure was not a threat. If you do a search in ICP Monitoring (Intercranial Pressure Monitoring) you will find a lot of information about the device, and process.

I had the ICP Bolt in when I was in an induced coma but my CSF fluid starting leaking out of my nose I had a lumbar drain done and was hooked up to another machine for a week to monitor the csf long term it hasn't caused any issues

An ICP bolt sounds like a Frankinstein invention but it is essential that pressure in the skull is relieved by whatever method so that it can function normally.

I have great faith in the neauros. They know what they are doing and most of us would not be here without their expertise.
