Concussion to Suicidal, a scary thing!

Hey all,

I have found myself with a deep and mean depression following this last concussion. I know depression is common with head injuries. I am really struggling and having suicidal thoughts daily. I hate it. It's not ME! I am normally happy go lucky!

This stuff is so hard! I have reached out to 988 a couple times and they have been so helpful. Speaking of them, if you're struggling: call or text 988. It's a suicide helpline. They are very supportive.

Does anyone have any advice with depression and concussion? It's a deep and scary and terrifying battle. Why would a brain want to betray you?

It's so exhausting and I'm keeping FAITH and HOPE and PERSERVERANCE.

Much love to you all,

Stay safe out there and reaching out for:

- advice

-similar experiences

-Support

-To be a advocate for people who also struggle with this

yes I too have had suicidal thoughts since brain injury and totally not me either! I find it happens a couple times a year and usually coincides before my menstrual cycle 😬 I have found talking to someone - walks with my dog and generally repeating to myself - this will pass, this will pass - has got me through so far 😀 hang in there and keep talking - there is always a better day and a solution to things xoxo

Been there!! Suffered a tbi in 2000. Lost husband, friends, family who couldn’t accept they see the old me. Petsonality unrecognisable? Spent 20 years redeveloping my character, got to shed the bad bits & hone the better?! Fortunatly my brain injury doesn’t allow me time to remember things so am unable to register depression?!!! Get up to put kettle on. Go to kitchen open door & have a fag! Coffee forgotten !! Go to shops for milk? Buy other crap. Put key in lock and bing!! Console myself with glass of water & chocolate bar I bought instead!! This happens less these days, after many years of not even knowing I need milk?! Life is a challenge! Smile to spite it!! Makes u stronger!! Talke care oh and SMILE!!

Yes have definitely been there. It can be hard but I've found the trick is recognising the dips before they take hold .

Remember it is a temporary situation and will pass. I also find getting out in the fresh air helpful, even the garden , if you have one.

Accept they may be part of your life , a crap part, but a part. A tiny part. Try and find what makes you happy and do that. You may have to force yourself to do it and may not be in the mood, but that's the point.

Is it a cure, sadly not, but can make living with your depression more livable.

Hi, Sorry to hear but yes been there and tried it! Doctors caused most of it saying nothing wrong with you but signing me off work with concussion. They put me on amitriptyline and it seems to have helped e en though it us a very low dose of 1 a day before bed. Basically I would say you need people to talk to to help as well as kicking your self to help stop it. Be strong and do not let it win!

Hi MountingGirl123

Having suffered with depression and I can really identify with you-it is, as you say, a dark tunnel but with time and the help of people you have mentioned, it really does pass.

I had a brain abscess aged 50 and, although I went back to work 18 months later, I simply couldn’t do the job I’d previously loved. This was a big blow to me but, by this time, I was determined that this horrible depression wasn’t going to get the better of me so I enrolled on a course called European Driving Licence in secretarial studies and passed! This was such a huge relief as it showed that I least could do something.

I know this feeling is not as simple as that and I still have warnings that it might easily return.

Please pray that it will pass and you’ll find the hope and trust the peace come to you again.

I agree that -whatever you do, don’t give up

If you can face a person you can trust, take that step-I pray that you’ll find the help you deserve.

Depression is crippling but, even if you don’t feel anything could help, keep on keeping on as someone said to me.
