What were you told about them? I knew nothing when I can out of the hospital and recently requested my notes and found out I had plates fitted to hold the skull in place.
Will I beep at airports now? Do they move? I had what sounded like a crack the other day.
They probably did tell me something but I've no recollection of it and as during covid I was on my own in Hospital.

At my post-surgery review they showed me the plates and they are small and thin (not sure if they come in different sizes?). They might have called them butterfly plates. I think I have 4.
My memory tells me that we will not beep at airports - someone please correct if not correct.
I was told to be careful of having no bangs to my head.
I am unsure if there is an issue with having an MRI scan due to having the metal plates. I am going to post this question.
I can't recall any other info.

I had a TBI back in 2014 and as a result half my scull is titanium, which naturally beeps everywhere.
Whether you have have any beeps will depend on the specific construction of your plates. If you don’t yet know you need to find out.

'Post Surgery review' now there is a phrase I never heard. Basically I had Surgery 2am Tuesday morning sent home 6pm Thursday. and that was about it. Covid in full swing so I'd imagine that had something to do with it.
Didn't think about MRI's. Thats in interesting one, are CTs different I wonder...
Hi, you mentioned that you requested your notes and I was wondering how you went about doing this? My RTA/severe head injury happened 25 years ago and after years of not coming to terms with it and trying to get on with life (and failing!) I now realise that there’s so much I don’t know and understand about what happened to me. I’ve often wondered if looking at my hospital record would be possible. I was only 17 at the time and my parents are now in their late 70s and don’t talk about it or seem to remember the details.

My op was 2 years ago so I made an online application to St Georges just asking to see copies of all records and scans they have of me. Took a little while but come through OK.
Not sure how long it would take with a bigger timeframe and the rules that existed at the time but it won't hurt to ask. Most hospitals have to have a section that talks about freedom of Information.
If you can get them it does help a bit knowing what they actually did but I think it is a nice to know more than getting closure on any specific memory ( or lack of )
Thanks for this, I’m going to make it my goal in the New Year to follow this up. I just don’t feel I can move forward until I know the facts, there were also a few medical mistakes made and I want to know what went on.

it helped me to have the details of hospital records but I only understood the simple things not the scan details etc .. but just knowing how I was moved from wards , the amount of head scans I had how the bleeds were changing etc did help me understand what had happened to me Sue x
Thanks, I was about 6 months overall in hospital so if they are still available I’m sure it’s a lot of paperwork! As you say it will be just about knowing some of the details and a bit more about what happened. I don’t necessarily think it will resolve everything but hope it can help me come to terms with it a bit better.

I was desperate to know and it did help to a degree , I still have days where I struggle to understand but have more knowledge has definitely helped .. I would ask if they can give you more details although it was strange reading about yourself but it made it more real and for me that helped ..

Interesting comments already here. I wish all of you all the best. I had a craniotomy and only really found out a good while later that I have metal in my head, not to replace any skull, just to hold my cut out bit in place, if you see what I mean. And of course the metal clipping of the large aneurysm. In October I had an MRI scan of my brain (first MRI since 2016 when aneurysm was found) and I rang the radiology department before the scan to find out if the metal in my brain was going to be a problem. I was assured that it's all OK, they'd checked beforehand. My clipping is titanium and I guess the little rivet (?) bits are too. Good luck!
My Scan pictures actually came through this morning and I'm the same, bits to hold the hole shut. 1 Burr hole disc and 2 bars. Looked up what they used and mine are titanium too.
I was in hospital during covid and have no memories of the week I was in my first memory of talking to my husband was that I wanted to leave or I would walk .. I sort of remember this .. . I left with no information on where my skull has fractured , where the bleeds were ..the discharge note had my neck fracture s were and the broken clavicle …
I asked for my note which took 8/9 months to get to me which explain the fracture and bleeds and also has different vertebrae numbers than I had before 😢
The best I got was from the consultant who was looking after my shoulders who informed me after I asked that it was at the back of my head . He was shocked I didn’t know ..
my husband was given very little information about me and although I was awake after being unconscious I had no idea of anything .. it was gob smacking to have no memory but often happens with head injuries ( I found this out from Headways ) shame to hospital had no idea that I had no idea about any of it .. and they were a head injury ward !!! 😢
Dear Bman, I have titanium mesh, but always surpised no problem going thru metal detectors at airports or court houses, unless I forget to remove my belt!
