Recovering from a traumatic brain injury.

Hi all.

I am currently 9 months into recovering from a massive brain trauma and have good days and bad but more worrying is that I am so intolerant and snappy at home with the people who have been there the most for me and look at a lot of things so negative rather than positive.

I say to my self right be nice today and think I am but then snap at the kids of give them mrs a hard time when she has been the one who has dealt with it all from the moment it happened and I hate being like this with her !

Thanks

Hi there I am roughly the same time into recover from tbi. I have the same problem but I have started to relate the reasons behind it. For me it's usually after 6 in the afternoon when I am tired. My boyfriend and I have an arrangement where I just say , its that time, he then knows that anything that potentially comes out of my mouth is not meant ! It's very hard to explain to people what happens, it's involuntary and not something you can easily control. My best advice is talk to your children and partner and try to explain it is "the other you". I have improved over the last few months if that helps you and communicating is, I think, key.

Hi Golfer, poor emotional control is common in early recovery. Have a look at the Headway website, they have information about this, their contact information is pinned to this page.

You may need to have some help from a neuro-psychologist to explore your emotions, and how you interact with others, also to help you and your family manager these symptoms. You can get referred to a neuro-psychologist via the rehab team or your GP.

There is help, and it can improve, best wishes 🍀

Have you thought of CBT Golfer ? It can help you change your thinking rather than stressing over how to control it. Talk with your GP and maybe get a referral ? Behaviour therapy helped me massively (despite initial scepticism).

There'll likely be a wait, so all the more reason to get things underway asap. Meantime, at least you'll know there's help in the pipeline and it'll be a relief to your loved ones.

Best wishes, Cat x
