Filling in the blanks

β€’3 Replies

Spoke to my mum again at length about my road accident and my injuries. She told me I were extremely lucky to survive as I needed urgent surgery after I'd been hit and I was unconscious throughout the ordeal they kept me in intensive care to monitor the bleed on my head..I knew none of this until today..truth is I were seriously injured back in 1983..37 years on and I'm still here that in itself is a miracle..I'm learning so much at the moment about all this and I'm so glad I can now share my story via this forum..πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

It's good that you are able to fill some of the blanks, it is quite a journey in time, and might help you to understand where you are today.

A friend at school that experienced a severe brain injury. He was hit by an ambulance on blue lights, sounds like a start of a bad joke. When he returned to school, he was a very different person, easily lead, aggressive, have to say he wasn't a friend, if anything he became an arch enemy.

That's me in a nut shell pal had my accident at 10 and about 11 it had all changed for me forever..went from a shy quiet little lad to one angry aggressive irrational all of above I were fighting so much I ended up breaking my hand it was a total change in personality let's just say without support back then up until recently I lived a very chaotic and challenging life and speaking with my mum today has defo given me a little more understanding of what happened..I think my doctors are finally starting to listen to me now as they rung me today and made me a telephone appointment next week I've got many questions for him lol πŸ‘πŸ‘

Glad you are finding out a bit more now Stammers. I hope it's a relief, and not too much of a shock for you. You must be on an emotional rollercoaster, but I'm glad for you that it's helpful being in here and sharing, and getting support.

Glad you are getting to talk to your doctor. Perhaps have a chat with the Headway helpline beforehand and talk over any questions you might have in advance? I always try and talk through anything I want to know beforehand and make notes - and get a friend to help me simplify any questions into bullet points to make it quicker to get answers I need.

Your experience raises an interesting issue - because, given the difficulties adults with BI still have getting support and rehab , I suspect children are still getting missed in the system even today.
