Update on challenge

Not been on here for a while. I posted a few times before about me wanting to do 3 Yorkshire peaks challenge with the man who runs the BI group I go to. This has been going on years now and finally could be ended next year.

Skip this paragraph and the next if you want to read what’s happening about this now. Briefly in 2017 the man said I wouldn’t manage the 3 Yorkshire peaks since then I’ve wanted to prove him wrong. In 2018 he agreed we’d work upto them with 5 mile hill walk adding 5 mile each walk til we got to 25. We got as far as 10. The 5 mile was easy with only a few easy hills tho 2 didn’t manage that I found it easy. Next 10 mile I’d expected similar to the 5 mile but double length which would have been easy. Wrong this was much more like what a peak will be. Constant up hill 5 mile then down. After 2 mile I went dizzy and out of 8 people with us who would be closest to me then? The man I want to do peaks with. He dealt with it great asking if I needed to go back then after I’d said I’d be ok got me to eat which helped thankfully. After that I was ok and completed the walk. I was still keen to do more walks like this but the man decided not to.

2019 he had said we would do another 10 mile hill walk this year but no more. This went down to 5 mile where we did first 5 mile walk. He then got other members of staff to tell me they couldn’t go along with me wanting to do the peaks cos of the risk after me struggling on the 10 mile walk. I kept training and telling the man what I’d done. We finally got to do the 5 mile hill walk which had again been changed to just 3 mile with 2 groups so more could go. 3 mile hillier walk and a shorter flat walk. The man took the 3 mile hillier walk with me and few others. We actually did 4& half mile. I think this along with a member of staff who had insisted I needed a drs note to do anything leaving helped. As by December the man had promised next year 2020 we would do 1 peak.

So at start of this year we talked about doing 1 peak. Again we still had totally different ideas about this. We agreed 1 peak and that was all we agreed on. I saw this as my chance to prove I could manage 1 and more and hopefully do more after either that same day or go again to do more. He insisted it would be 1 peak then over with no more ever. So my idea was get the 1 peak done then work on doing more knowing the main reason he’s hesitant about doing more is cos if anything happened to me pushing myself too much he’d be in trouble so once he can see I’m ok I think/thought he’d do more. We was going to talk and plan a date in March but the country/world went into lockdown so all plans cancelled/delayed. Honestly I didn’t do much training during lockdown still had normal walks with my dog but no hills. I was told by another member of staff that the man had said we would still do a peak next year now. I’m still keen to do more than 1 peak and planned to use this to get him to agree to the chance of more. So as lockdown eased I started doing longer walks and to local hilly area near me.

First day back at centre I’d decided I’d just say now it’s going to be next year we need new agreement I knew he would never suddenly agree to all 3 peaks so said 2 peaks. He just laughed. I mentioned that I knew he would do more if he knew I would be ok. So now the agreement is pretty much the best I could hope for. Still only do 1 peak to start with, but if I manage that ok we can go back another time to do 2 and it’s not limited to 2 we can go back and do 3 if I’m ok doing 2. Now I’ve wanted to do all 3 for so long now it’s got to stage where I’ve got to try even tho I think or know I would struggle. So as annoying as it is not to go straight in to do all 3 I think this is the best way as he said the day we do 1 it will be just 1 as we will only have time for 1 and considering I’ve done an 8 mile walk with only a few hills and steps for about 2 mile and I was glad to have a rest after I think only being able to do 1 to start with is for best then I’ll have time to train for 2 and see how that goes.

Well next year should be good this challenge which to be fair I have got to make sure I manage as I have pestered the man who runs the BI group so much. He has now said in a different conversation he will take 3 of us to Brantingham to have a walk there next year. This is nothing to do with the peaks. A woman who goes to the group said she’s hoping to get back driving and have a walk round Brantingham and the man said he’d take her, me and one other next year. He said the reason everything is being put to next year is cos of Covid and the restrictions in place they can’t give people lifts in their cars at the minute and normally I do get lifts with them.

So next year I’m hoping to do walk at Brantingham then the Yorkshire peaks 1, 2 then all 3.

Well it seems as long as I don’t feel dizzy during any of the peaks I will have the chance to do them all. Back in 2018 we did a 10 mile walk in hope valley and 2 mile in I felt dizzy, this is what put the man off doing more similar walks with me. I did complete the walk after eating and was keen to do more. Which is why this is still going on.

Today the man agreed providing I don’t feel dizzy doing any of the peaks he will do more. Still got to train towards this as I know after doing 1 the next one I’ll probably find hard which will be 2 peaks. Honestly I’ll be happy to have done all 3 peaks in 2 separate days, but I’ve wanted to do all 3 in a day so long it’s like I have to do it so going to see how I manage 2 then very likely go for all 3.
