3 peak challenge

Has anyone done this? I go to a BI group and they are encouraging everyone to get fitter, walking, running and exercising. The woman who runs group has got a few of us in a Fitbit group which is we wear this Fitbit round our wrist and it counts how many steps we do in a day. Now one of the men in the group has said he wants to run a marathon. So that has sort of set the woman off encouraging everyone to do some running. She has signed us up for a 5km walk/run in December also doing a total warrior assault course in June. The man who runs group is into running and fitness big time and he has said after he gets back from running a marathon in New York he will plan some time to help me get used to running and set me targets. Not sure what this will be or when but will find out next week or week after. Last week he mentioned something about walking the 3 peaks and noticed I was listening and said I wouldn’t be up to doing it yet. He did it this July and said he was still tired 2 days after so I know it must be tough. It got me thinking I’m not one to give in or not attempt things. So looking at all encouragement and help I know I’ll get off both man and woman I’m thinking it would be nice to work towards walking the 3 peaks next year. Even got a date in mind 14th July. That will be the 6 year anniversary of my BI. Also would like to do it as sponsor event to raise money for the charity but do it so the man and woman don’t know its raising money for them then at end I can tell them as a surprise for them.

What a brilliant idea, something positive to focus and work towards and lovely to raise money at the same time :)

I haven't done it myself but know people who have get in as much training as you can and practise pacing yourself too . Good for you! :)

Yea do have a look in your area if there is any BI groups but sadly there is a lack of them. Headway being main one over the country but I didn’t have much luck with them in Rotherham. I moved to Bridlington and heard about this one in Hull so I go there twice a week or more if they are doing anything extra. This was set up by a man who had BI from an unprovoked attack and to hear what he’s been through is awful a few times he’s been on about it and I have to remind myself it’s cos of what he’s been through that he’s set up this group. I can’t wait to get started. Hoping to get started or at least find out what the plan will be next Wednesday but depends if the man is up for sorting something that soon as he only gets back from New York then.

Support your aims to improve but the true 3 peaks challenge - all three summits in a day is a riddiculous thing to attempt by even the most able. The amount of driving between points in tbe early hours of the morning is a buge risk even for those not walking.

I would suggest findiing a less risky challenge

All the best for your journey

I know it’s going to be very tough I mean I remember the man who set group up saying when he did it in July this year he was tired for next 2 days and feeling fed up cod at time he was learning stuff ready for a personal trainer exam. He struggles with short term memory so just couldn’t concentrate on it. It was only like on 3rd day he came to allotment and felt better. This is someone who’s used to running marathons. So I will talk to him about it and decide if it’s something I want to do or I could just aim to do 1 or 2 of them.

It isn't so much the physical effort but the logistics of moving the participants from Ben Nevis to Scarfell pike which is over 6 h without stops or delays then a further 4 and half hours from Scarfell pike to Snowdon.

There is a large risk not only to the participants but also the people driving for extended periods trying to get to the locations as quickly as possible.

The walkers can sleep/ rest in the vehicles but the drivers can't concentration failure through tiredness and this can lead to risk taking and some severe consequences

When I took part, thirty years ago, the most competitive participants ran down the slopes to shorten their time! It's tough, but doable. There were groups using the day to raise funds for charity- easier now through on line funding like "just giving"

Once you have that under your belt you could look to doing the National Three Peaks in a year or two.

Good luck,

Jan

Thanks for that. I think what I will do is work towards doing the 3 peaks, but for the 6 year anniversary of my BI if possible do as much of them as I can manage. Will still aim for all 3 but just see what I manage. Still going to do it as sponsor to raise money but get people to say set amount regardless of how much we do.

It’s certainly worth thinking about, if you suffer/struggle with fatigue you’d need to work out how to manage it.

And if your mobility is effective or not, and how well you cope with transport. Also if your not used to walking on high land and the ability to cope if weather closes in etc.

There is a 24hr and 3 day versions. Sadly beyond me now since i cognitively tire any way and my walking I find tiring now. Though having grown up in such land I’m comfortable in high lands and risks with this.

This said all are hills you can just walk up, one has a train and people have driven up at least a few of them so if you are reasonably fit they in them selfs aren’t difficult climbs.

It would be the Yorkshire ones I do so in a day or 12 hours. I don’t suffer with fatigue but the man who runs group does a bit. I will talk to him to see how he managed doing them this year.

Well it seems the date is set. Today the woman was marking on a calendar challenges for people next year. Got a total warrior assault course in June l, a woman who only recently started walking again walking along Humber bridge in February which a lot of us are doing with her. Then 3 peaks 14th July as it will be the 6 year anniversary of my BI. Going to be tough having the total warrior then 3 peak few week apart but tomorrow I should be able to plan some time to practice running with the man who runs group to get me ready for it. Oh before all that there’s a 5km run/walk next month. Going to run as much as I can but should be ok as I’m fine walking a few miles.
