Driving assessment

Hi. I am going for my driving assessment on Friday after 16 months of brain injury. I was wondering what sort of questions are asked especially on the paper I have to do. Thanks in advance 😊

When I did mine they were really nice, explained everything etc. They did tests compatable to the problems I was having. It was straight forward and relaxed so don't worry. You'll have an OT taking you through the indoor, paper tests, like drawing a 3D cube, putting hands on a clock and periferal vision tests etc. The driving was fine, they said they were not testing my driving but checking to see if my driving skills as a driver were safe in regards to the BI issues. I failed 3 paper tests including the 3D test but passed the overall assessment. I scored 27/30 overall which is the bare minimum.

Thanks. Why and what are the papers for. What have they got to do with driving.

They are for visual spacial awareness, it may have been specific to the conditions I had, I had to fill in loads of forms about my condition first months before being tested. They also did memory tests.

If it hasn't affected your sight you can expect drawing a clock face with the right time (10 to 11), braking reaction time, brake and steering pressure, completing a puzzle whilst listening for a certain word; Google the Rookwood Driving Battery test. That will be carried out by an Occupational Therapist. The driving assessment will be with an driving instructor with the Occupational Therapist monitoring from the rear seat.

I have hemianopia after a stroke that has affected my right-hand peripheral vision. I sailed through the cognitive and physical tests. On the driving assessment, the driving assessor failed me and the Occupational Therapist passed me: end result - failed and no second chance for an assessment, effectively a lifetime ban.

I'm in the UK. We have a procedure called "exceptional case" where in theory you can have refresher driving lessons before the assessment, as it may be two years since you drove. However, those driving lessons won't happen.

I had to do a (in a computer-simulated right-foot gas & brake pedal timing test) and I had to do an actual driving test (the Driving Therapist only screamed twice!).
