Should be better?

It's been nearly 12 months since my brain haemorrhage it's been a very hard road without my partner's support I don't know where I would be now we've had to fight for support professional help I'm only just now getting any professional help my mental health and anxiety levels are at a very very low point due to lack of help and the pressure my partner as been put through with no help for him ether and what gets me now is because it's been nearly 12 months people seem to think I must be automatically better not just friends but so called professionals as well ! But in not my head is constantly spinning with uncertainties about work money people social situations etc I might look physically ok even though I need a stick to help with my balance but mentally I'm worse does anyone else feel the same way or had the same experience?

Hi,

I’m so sorry you’re feeling so poorly. I’ve seen lots of posts here from people in a similar position. It seems common that people quickly forget you’re not back to normal if you look ok. Have you called the Headway Helpline? It can be really helpful to talk to someone who understands and has awareness of the symptoms and effects of brain injury. Wishing you good luck with your continuing recovery x

Yes I have heard of headway and I went to one of their meetings when I came out of hospital but I couldn't deal with it I should really try and go back my main issues now are anxiety and depression and I go to pieces of of my comfort zone I used to be a very outgoing person but now I'm the opposite

I totally understand, it’s so easy to lose confidence when you’re out of the loop for a while. Do try and go back to Headway and see how it feels now a bit more time has passed. It’s hard to imagine that things will improve but they do. It just takes time. If you’ve been in a busy job and lifestyle, it’s difficult to cope with things moving or improving slowly. It’s also hard if you’re feeling anxious to imagine happy times returning. Do let us know how the Headway visit goes if you decide to go. Remember you’re never alone, everyone here relates to your symptoms and lots of people on the forum have some first hand experience x

12 months is a very short time. ive had my abi 7yrs ago and yes you look at me and youd think there was nothing wrong but i can go from calm to aggressive in the blink of an eye lid.

my psychiatrist says ill always be like this and there no meds he can prescribe to stop me from being the way iam, im also epileptic, noise intolerant, hate crowds, strangers and social occassions, just to mention a few.

my psychiatrist wanted to give me anti depressants, but i refused them because i wasnt depressed, after a long discussion about medication, he gave me a choice of epilim or carbamazapine, wrong choice, i chose epelim and my weight ballooned.

i was weaned off epelim and carbamazapine was introduced, my weight is gradually coming down.

maybe thats why you were put on keppra. its also used for anxiety. im not a doc so dont take my word for it, it may say something on the paperwork that comes in the box.

They put me on keppra when I was in a coma from my TBI I came out of hospital and I was still on them I've not seen the brain neurologist since I came out of hospital last July we've had to fight for help it's been apauling I've only just seen a phycologist who was brilliant and a neurologist who to be honest I found to be very strange and no help

ask to see a different neurologist, i did. the first one talked down to me, i went to walk out to stop me from putting him through the window.

He sat pointing his finger on my face shouting you will get better and put his face right in my face I was in total shock couldn't believe it I've got no faith in any of them

if you do see him again, stick your face into his and tell him he may have the letters after his name, but until he lives with an abi / tbi on a daily basis he doesnt know what he is talking about.

I wouldn't see him again if my life depended on it nasty man I was told neurologist can be funny but he was just rude with no bedside manner .He told me to get down the gym and get my heart pumping !! He shouldn't be saying that my partner was told I was not to exercise due to blood pressure etc until I've been given the all clear by my consultant .I know who I'm listening to the man who saved my life not him

Hiya Gym1bunny.

12 month is a short time with a brain injury & it is a hidden disability.

You’re like most people on HealthUnlocked and shouldn’t rush yourself to get back into work etc.. anxiety and fatigue seem to affect most brain injury survivors but your injury is unique to you.. don’t rush yourself because other people say you “look fine” and stick around, talking to other people with the same hidden disabilities helps to make you feel better and more understood (I’m speaking from experience😁)

Hi Gym1bunny,

I do agree with previous responses. My sister is only 4 months after SAH so this is a very, very early stage of her recovery. She suffers from anxiety, low mood, chronic fatigue and as ABI is an invisible disability, people around her this think she is fine only because she is physically fine. Even her OT encouraged her to come back to work, despite the issues that may make her return to work simply impossible. What a misjudgement!

Take it easy, speak to people with similar problems and seek support from people who understand brain injury and limitations it brings.

From what I gather, I understand a recovery after ABI is a long lasting process, and some people speak about years...

Thank you for your reply I know how hard it is for your sister especially when people say oh you look so well ! I'm not a violent person but it makes me want to punch them and scream at them walk in my shoes for a day ! Memory loss fatigue anxiety your head buzzing when in the company of to many people it's life changing and people don't realise it .sending my best wishes to your sister xxx
