Has anyone any advice on the best way to get counselling for my 27 year old son. He's struggling at the minute. 6 weeks minimum wait with the NHS

Hi , in my trust area we were allowed to self refer it is quicker only took about 3-4 weeks. The only other way I can think of is to pay privately. It could bridge the gap while waiting for the NHS. Not ideal but could be the answers if it's so urgent xx

Hi

My local headway team holds a list of local counsellors who have had extra brain illness/injury training.

Might be worth an ask ? ☺

Hi Mickdondan. I had and still have counciling from Headway and its been brilliant for my recovery, I can highly recommend it. Give your local Headway a call.

I see you've got lots of good advice on how to get counselling. Please take a look into 'Mindfulness'. This will be more of a long term thing for him & can help with emotions, pain & in general the enjoyment of life with a degree of acceptance of certain struggles he may have.

It has helped me no end & has stopped severe negative thoughts along with suicidal thoughts.

How is he struggling at this time?

Regards

X

He's very angry and gets low mood. He was always such a laid back person.

I can totally relate to that Mickdondan. And I totally agree with advice from Tony-muzzy mindfulness helped me enormously. I am 3 yrs past my TBI diagnosis and over a year since I completed my mindfulness classes. I can still experience bursts of anger, which are alien to my previous laid back personality, I have found these tend to occur when I am tired or have used my brain too much. It takes a lot more energy to use your brain to do even simple things now. The advice I still try to follow is pace yourself, divide up your day, allow for and take proper rest periods.

Best of luck Anne

Thank you tigeranne14. I've forwarded this message on to my son. All these symptoms are new to my son as he got his brain injury sept 2015. It's only been confirmed the last few months as we have had to wait for appointments and before that test results.
