It is a commonly prescribed medication and many people take it with no adverse effect but it positively manages the condition it was prescribed for. Any medication can have adverse effects but there is no knowing who will be ok on it and who will encounter problems so sometimes the prescription has to be changed to something else. Just because it wasn't ok for your sisters twins does not mean that Mark will have the same problem. Unfortunately with medication it has to be taken to find out the positive or negative reaction and if it doesn't suit Mark then it would be stopped and something else prescribed. Even that other medication may or may not suit him. It is trial and error where meds are concerned.
Just want to back up what Caroline has said.......................that Kepra is trial and error but widely used. Fingers crossed it will be suitable with no unpleasant effects.
Hope it works well for Mark ; let us know how he gets on Debbie. xx
Hello Debbie. Just to say my husband has been taking Keppra for around 2 years now for his seizures, along with Phenytoin and Pregabalin, and doesn't seem to suffer any major side effects.
It's always difficult to know when they take so many other types of medication along with these, but the only possible ones I wonder about are weight gain, and fatigue, but other medications cause this anyway. Good luck with it, and hopefully it will suit him ok.
PS He hasn't had a major seizure for almost 2 years!!
Best wishes, Molly
Keppra is a common and one of the newer epilepsy drugs, as others have said need to try it and see.
Sadly lot of these medications do have side effects a number of other epilepsy drugs, are linked over long term use with reduced bone density.
Essentially these are powerful drugs.
My hubby was prescribed keppra when he had a seizure following his BI and when he was in acute care.
It certainly didn't cause any aggression issues for him.
When we got to neuro rehab the doctor suggested removing the drug as hubby only had a single seizure after the bump. So weened off it and in two and a half years no further seizure since. This will not be the case for all and maybe not always the case for him so please don't stop taking it without advice or support
In behaviour terms there was no difference before or after removing the medication.
My advice would be go with it but keep a diary so if you believe it is causing issues you are able to explain fully to the GP
Hi Debbie. I have taken Keppra 3000mg daily for the last ten years for my epilepsy. It's side effects do tend to subside after a couple of years but do not fully go away. But it is an excellent drug and let Mark try it and bear with it.
Thanks everyone I've made appointment for Monday. We'll give it a try 👍
Hi, I have taken 2000mg of Keppra for 16 months now as I had an AVM & aneurysms - happily removed on the 19th of November this year. I feel it has made me very short tempered and I react quicker to negativity than I would do without it.
However- this could have been my condition rather than the meds & can honestly say, I noticed no other side effects.
As mine was not for epilepsy, I am now hoping to be able to stop it when I see my neurologist this coming Monday.
Fingers crossed it will suit him.
Have a good Christmas.

I have been on Keppra since Jan this year 2015 started off with 500mg x 2 a day upped to 4 x a day.
Then upped to 1000mg 2 x a day and the last few week added a 500mg so still playing around to find right dosage.
Each time I started new dosage I felt weird spacey feeling a bit like being drunk but not a pleasant feeling of drunk!!!!
Also I find I'm easily agiated and can switch to being really nice then my "bitch flip switch" just rears its ugly head so not sure if its a combination of meds and ops I have had.
My neurologist says its the best one to take!!!!
We may even look at trying the generic Levetiracetam as I have to pay and Keppra is expensive here in Cyprus and the generic is a lot cheaper so we will see.

Hi D, check Marks meds out on drugs.com. Have a look at all he takes in conjunction with it! Particularly look at other things, you should not take some meds with. I was prescribed Propranolol for my PBC, neither drink or cancer related, I also take Thyroxine and the 2 together in the system were a no no for me!
Ps I (brain) react very quickly to changes in meds since my BI.
