Direct Payments

Has anybody had any luck with getting any Direct Payments ? I have met with the local authority and my wife (she gets carers allowance) has met with them separately.

When we look at the criteria to get a direct payment we should qualify but nothing seems to be forthcoming. Anybody on here had any success in getting direct payments ?

Hi, Not sure what you mean by a Direct Payment, but I have been fortunate to receive a £200 payment as the only carer for my husband, and apparently this can be applied for each year from April. We live in Leicestershire.

Molly, Thanks for the response. The Adult Services in each Local Authority have funds to enable disabled and vulnerable people to lead a more independent and productive live. There is also a form of payment that can go to the carer as well.

There are quite a few people on this board whom should be eligible for it

Hi sospan,

We do have some information on Self-directed support/Direct payments on our website ( headway.org.uk/self-directe... ), and although it sounds like you will know all of this at this stage there may be information in there to help you work with the local authority to get things in place.

It was my understanding that all councils should be able to offer this at the moment; as it is just a different way of using the same care money, there shouldn't be any downside to them giving this to you.

Have you tried asking to speak to one of the managers in the Social Services department? It might help to find out if this is a policy issue, or just a member of staff who is not sure about the options.

Do feel free to contact our helpline on 0808 800 2244 or helpline@headway.org.uk if you would like to discuss this in more detail.

Best wishes,

Headway

Hi, I have been getting 16 hours direct payment per week for the last 4 years.

It's a lot of work getting and sorting the payments, but definetley worth having if you're entitled to it. If you wish to ask any specific questions please send a private message, or if you wish to speak in person I can give my phone number.

Best wishes Joanne
