Anyone got over the 'balance' problem? (14 months after RTA)
after an operation to reduce the size of a tumour at the front of my brain I suffered horribly, over the past five years it has improved but still there
I went on a cruise it was great to see everyone suffering with their balance just the way I did. only mine seemed to improve while out at sea
Since a sah 15 months ago my balance has gradually deteriorated. The other night I waited 'til it was dark before walking to the local post box as I didn't want to be seen looking like a drunken woman (especially as I don't drink).
I'm thinking of starting Tai-chi, as recommended by Gina, to see if it helps the situation. I hate being so out of control.
I used rollerbowler board and cycling as slowly as poss (not on road!), standing on one foot etc. and more recently yoga. I don't think I'll ever surf again, but now 4 years I reckon I'm average (less if ill or fatigued). As per above comment, my motion sickness is MUCH improved; probably become habituated to it.
Good luck; it's one of those things you can work on any time, anywhere you feel suited
After I was discharged from hospital, I immediately bought a lovely new yellow bike, I suppose to prove to myself and family that nothing had changed. First time out, I thought I was wobbling about owing to the bike being unfamiliar. Next time was worse etc etc. My lovely yellow bike now sits unused in the cellar.....I would be a danger to myself and others.
You're right though, Bards, I do need to do more training. x
The bike sounds a good idea (the exercise one) any other type of bike left in our house is cannibolised for spare parts!!
I get bouts of seasickness, sometimes just in the morning sometimes just hits in the middle of the day, sometimes it lasts for days other times its just when im fatigued, but i suppose when it lasts for days im fatigued... sometimes its so bad its hard to tell which way is up, i go back to bed then. Mostly its like im walking on a mushy surface so i feel like mr softy from the mint adverts from years ago!! I have had some pearling bruises on my face and shoulder and painful ones on my hip from bouncing off door frames and furniture. I suppose after a wjile you kind of become used to it.
My RTA was 2004.
Hi pollyanne,
Thank you for your question.
Have you ever been referred to a neurologist or physiotherapist to assess this? There are sometimes exercises that physios can give you to help improve balance problems.
Best wishes,
Headway.
Was discussed at last meeting briefly(neurologist said cut down caffine levels?) -but asking to be refered to a endocrinologist at next meeting as read on this website that hormone imbalance could also cause it. many thanks for all the info!
Hi pollyanne,
That sounds like a good plan - I'd probably suggest adding neurophysiotherapist to the list of referrals too, they are usually quite easy to find so it should be a possibility.
Hormonal imbalances could cause symptoms like dizziness that can affect balance - do you have many of the symptoms from this web page: headway.org.uk/hormonal-imb... ?
Best wishes,
Headway.
my balance is still shot six years on
my eyes do more to balance than my ears
if can not see cannot stand at all in dark
can stand in dark if not touching things
dont close eyes in shower
live and learn diff things to make it better
i get bye hope you improve
no cure for me does not get better
i get better with dealing with it
i can ride a bike on an angle
if turn head do throw self in traffic
do fall off bike when think i seen money on floor
did stop riding on road some time ago
My balance is still not 100% many years after and have learned to accept by not letting it get to me. This is the new re-adapt version of myself.
