Question on iron absorption with Hemochromatosis

Hi. I have the genes for Hemochromatosis and have had 2 venesections. My last ferritin was 22 with normal iron panel so no more for now.

My question is diet related. What amount of iron do you eat per day to not over absorb but also not get anemic? I have been severely anemic in the past (about 20 years ago) and required a transfusion.

I know that absorption rate is different for heme and non- heme food sources. I get most of mine plant-based. My thinking is that I can't absorb more iron than I actually eat?

Thanks for any advice on this!

I don’t calculate how much iron I eat, I eat normally but avoid things like liver and fortified cereals. Plant based iron is harder to absorb. Drinking tea/coffee with meals and dairy products reduce the absorption. I have fruit and yoghurt for breakfast so probably not much getting through there, lunch will often be veggie and dinner might include red meat a few times a week but I take an omeprazole right beforehand and antacids prevent iron from being absorbed anyway! I wouldn’t overthink it and see how you get on with a balanced diet after a few months. I’m actually very anaemic at the moment due to pregnancy despite having haemochromatosis so it can happen easily!

Thank you for the good advice. I am on Omeprazole too so that should help. Good luck with the baby!
