I had my ferritin done privately a couple of weeks ago. The range was 34 to 400 and mine was 718. In 2015 my reading was over 800.

I'm certainly not expert in this area , but most doctors don't worry too much until ferritin goes beyond 1000.

However , it would be no harm to get tested for genetic Haemochromatosis, just to get it out of the way.

Also get CRP and ESR to see if inflammation is a factor.

Have you had transfusions in the last few years- operation?

Finally , an ultrasound would check internal organs - liver etc.

If you are in good health you shouldn't worry , allowing for all the above.

It may be worth emailing the Iron Disorders Institute with your particulars- they have a quaint email forum , but some good people.

Another alternative is to donate blood- 5 or 6 times a year. But keep an eye on Hgb levels. If you are inUSA , the clinic will take care of this aspect.

Good luck. Keep in touch.

Hi there.I had a neck operation a couple of years ago.I had 2 vertebrae replaced with carbon fibre ones. I was told by the doctor the I couldn't give blood cause my blood is high in iron.my doctor said he couldn't see the need for an ultrasound test cause my readings were normal.regards wayne

If you had transfusions during the operation - that would have raised the ferritin.

Donating blood will reduce it. Or ask for therapuetic phlebotomy.

Not what you're looking for?
