I'm certainly not expert in this area , but most doctors don't worry too much until ferritin goes beyond 1000.
However , it would be no harm to get tested for genetic Haemochromatosis, just to get it out of the way.
Also get CRP and ESR to see if inflammation is a factor.
Have you had transfusions in the last few years- operation?
Finally , an ultrasound would check internal organs - liver etc.
If you are in good health you shouldn't worry , allowing for all the above.
It may be worth emailing the Iron Disorders Institute with your particulars- they have a quaint email forum , but some good people.
Another alternative is to donate blood- 5 or 6 times a year. But keep an eye on Hgb levels. If you are inUSA , the clinic will take care of this aspect.
Hi there.I had a neck operation a couple of years ago.I had 2 vertebrae replaced with carbon fibre ones. I was told by the doctor the I couldn't give blood cause my blood is high in iron.my doctor said he couldn't see the need for an ultrasound test cause my readings were normal.regards wayne
