Hi does anybody know if you can eat ... - Gluten Free Guerr...
Hi does anybody know if you can eat coco pops if you are wheat intolerent
check the ingredients if it says barley on them then no as they are coated,as barley is a gluten which of course is a wheat, hope this helps i too am going through this wondering about foods since discovering my wheat intolerance a few months ago!
Barley is a different grain to wheat. It does have gluten present in it but no wheat. coco pops are also made from rice.
Yes gluten is similar to wheat and you can have an effect from that too,and the flavoring can be derived from wheat as remember there are often hidden wheat in foods, many who are wheat intolerant to wheat can react to barley malt too,and also the factory handling coco pops can have wheat on site so foods get contaminated, just be very careful.
Hi Connie,
These are the ingredients to Kellog's Coco Pops:
Rice, Sugar, Chocolate (4%)(Sugar, Cocoa Mass), Fat Reduced Cocoa Powder, Salt, Barley Malt Flavouring, Flavouring. Calcium Carbonate, Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B1 (Thiamin), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12.
So the basic ingredients are Rice, they do contain Barley Malt but according to this listing there is no wheat. So if you are definitely only wheat intolerant and do not have any other intolerances or allergies then they should be safe to eat. Occasionally some products do put wheat starch as a filler in their cocoa - but this should be listed as one of the starches within the ingredients if they choose to include it.
Here is a site with the wheat derivatives listed - in the UK we usually also add maltodextrin/maltodextrose as this is often produced using wheat in this country whereas in Canada and the US they mostly use corn for its production.
Hi I contacted kellogs and they say that because they use wheat in there factory . New legistation states that they cannot say there cereals are gluten free . I have noticed in the supermarkets there are a lot of gluten free cerials and this time of year with the cold weather gluten free porridge .
thank u all .I have been goin round in circles 4 the last year with my 3 year old.Had blood tests done they came back slighty positive .Then doc says its toddler diahorrea and nothing wrong with him.got more bloods done said he was intolerent to something told them caeolic runs in my family.Only reason i ever took him to be checked is that he has never had a solid stool from he was born Ihave tried him on th egluten free diet seemed to be working. Then i took him to a nutri k healthh studio and she did the glass bottle tests on him and he only reacted to Wheat and not Gluten.so I just dont know what to do whither do do wheat free or gluten free.He loves rice krisoes and coco pops have tried all gluten free cerals but he wont touch them. Also in the last few days he has got big black rings under eyes and his skin feels like sand paper!
Hi connieb,
I'm sorry you've had such a worrying time. Was your son eating wheat/gluten when he had the blood tests? The results can be inconclusive if you avoid gluten before the test (I'm sure your doc has told you this).
For wheat/gf cereals, have you tried any supermarket own-brands? Quite a few are listed in the coeliac UK handbook, so maybe they would be better for your little one:
ASDA Choco snaps
Co op Choco snaps
Morrisons Choco crackles
Sainsbury's Choco pops
Tesco Choco snaps
I hope you find out what's wrong, and that he gets better soon x
