Hi, and yes there are a few available, there's TVP textured vegetable protein just make sure that its soy based as it can me made from wheat. There's also Tofu which is bean curd made with soy milk. Tempeh is also a similar soy based product.

I'd check out your local health food shop and just make sure that it is a gluten free one with TVP.

Thank you Jerry. I'll make a note of that.

Hi,

I somethimes use TVP but for a tasty bolognaise sauce I use red lentils. They don't need any soaking but I've found it helps to cook them in water first and then add them to onions tomato garlic etc, otherwise they have a tendency to stick to the bottom of the pan.

For shepherd's pie, a combination of red and green lentils give a good texture with a bit more chewiness, which I guess might work well with bolognaise too,

Thank you Rach. I hadn't thought of using lentils as a bolog base. Will give red lentils a try. I do make a delicious German green lentil soup. Had probs initially getting GF lentils, but eventually found Sainsburys canned ones .

Why do you need a meat alternative? I roast a range of vegetables, such as peppers, onions, courgettes and aubergines and include those in the sauce.

Fair point, was looking at it from the perspective more of being a "meaty" coeliac.

Aside from soya/tofu, beans/pulses, nuts or peas/runner beans I guess would be a substitute.

That's another good idea, meanioni. Pre Coeliac days I would sometimes use Realeat 'mince' & other similar TSPs for bolognaise. I wondered if any of my fellow Coeliacs had found a GF version.

Ok, now you've got me worried/confused: GF-lentils??? I thought they were naturally gf? I use Great Scott green and red lentils or have regularly in the past. I thought they were safe? I also, sometimes for speed, use Tescos tinned green lentils. Please do let me know if I'm unintentionally glutening myself! Many thanks!!

Lexus I just googled Great Scott lentils ( see link above)

Dietary Information says....

Suitable for Vegetarians

May Contain Gluten.

As I mentioned, I've just been using Sainsbury's tinned because they have the GF crossed grain logo, but I'm interested to know of GF dried lentils!

Hi Brenda, thanks so much for your reply! I initiated another 'Question' line along the whole lentil debate. It was news to me that they could be glutened! ARGH! I've got DH and the slightest exposure leads to hours of maddening itching and then blisters... So that's a real drag re Great Scott. Bleurgh. Right, the hunt for 'safe' lentils begins today, sigh! If anyone out there has found lentils that are 'definitely' gf do drop a line! cheers!! :)
