Do you view the new GF pizzas in the UK by Prezzo, Pizza Hut & Dominos as a good move?

Or do you think it's a slippery slope where we risk cross contamination and opening up unhealthy fast food to coeliac kids and adults?

Or do you think 'who cares' we should have the same choice as everyone else?

I am in two minds. It is an exciting thought, that there will be a 'safe' place to eat and join in with the 'normal' people, but you picture pizza making and all I can see is flour flying around all over the place. Too risky I think. We have had some bad experiences with so called gluten free pasta at Carluccios and Zizzi's and I think pizza could be even worse. But to be honest we can't do pizza because me and my little boy can't do dairy either! I choose to see it as a blessing and think it might be saving him from some poor junk food choices in his teens and might help avoid obesity.

I wouldn't risk it and I wouldn't enjoy it as the risks are too high. I always thought that they cook pizza's directly on the oven shelves to get the bottom of the pizza crispy so how would coeliac be sure that they were safe? regardless of cross contamination in the making of the pizza in a non gluten free environment in the first instance.

I also think that with any restaurant the risk is that when the chef/catering staff are busy they see their kitchen implements as the tools of their trade and not as a potential risk hazard. And when busy they just do things automatically.

Gluten has too dramatic effect on me to think who cares as I care and to me staying healthy is far more important than appearing normal.

On a Princess Line cruise the gluten free bread was placed on top of other toast, Gluten cakes were put on another plate and the passenger was told they were sent up by chef. So one had to watch what went on withstaff care. This was lack of understanding about delayed reaction, even if trained some cannot accept it is serious to have gluten free foods at all times/ So not sure about care with pizza.

Seems like a big risk. They would ideally need a GF space, utensils and oven which is a big investment. So I think I will stick to making my own. Also, I don't like cheese on Pizza and real Neapolitan pizzas don't have cheese they have anchovies and olive so I prefer to make my own.

I've just ordered a Pizza Hut one, so I'll let you know tomorrow!

I spoke with the staff for a while who talked me through the process. They have a separate new tray for each GF pizza to go in the oven, then a new board for slicing. They have a special area for prep of GF pizza. He said all the toppings are GF (although when I checked the allergy info online a couple of toppings were not guaranteed GF).

It sounds like they are taking the ultimate care, and the Pizza Hut ones have been developed with Coeliac UK. I like the way they are square not round too - so you wouldn't (and the staff wouldn't) confuse your pizza with a normal one.

Whilst I agree that having a healthy diet is the best way forward, everyone needs a treat now and then, and everyone should have the chance to feel normal. I'm not a health food freak, although I generally follow a healthy diet. I'm further compromised in the food choices I can make from other issues, so I'm pleased to see more GF food out there, giving me more options.

BTW: you can also order the pizza without cheese if you want to, so lactose intolerant people can try it too.

Feeling fine folks!

Pizza was nice. I did enjoy it and wasn't worried about contamination after chatting with the staff and then turning up early to see it be made.

Personally, my homemade pizza is much tastier, but hey, I work over 60 hours a week and it's not always possible to cook from scratch. Sometimes you just need a break! I'd have one again. Impressed. And nice to know it's an option.

I went to pizza hut yesterday and had a fantastic time! For the first time in my life I could go and was so excited!

I read up as much as I could before I went and from what I read alot was done in order to avoid cross contamination as much as possible! I've had no stomach pains or anything, so it gets a thumbs up from me! I also thought it was the best bought pizza base I've ever had, even my boyfriend loved it! I will be returning and its nice to know we have another option!
