Have you had your iron, folate, ferritin and B12 levels checked, i was low across the board and and will have to have B12 jabs for the rest of my life. However my other iron levels are now normal, my hairloss was horrific, i am talking no hair on the sides of my head and i was left with about a quarter of my hair elsewhere. it has taken a very very long time and although its still thin and the sides and still alot thinner all over than it used to be it much better than it was, it has taken me nearly 2 years to recover, although i do also suffer from overaactive thyroid which also can cause hairloss.

Good luck at the doctors tomorrow, get them to check all of your iron in particular B12.

Hi Janie, Shortage of the B vitamin categories can lead to both thinning hair and hair loss. Years ago they always used to encourage woman who were in this situation to eat daily doses of brewer's yeast ... this is not an option for us as it is obtained from barley. There are several Vitamin B Complex high strength options that do not contain gluten that you can get - but it might be an idea to obtain some from your doctor as he would be able to prescribe the highest possible strength and he also could test to make sure that you are not short of any other nutrient. Sometimes it can be due to lack of vitamin H, often called vitamin B7 or biotin can cause problems with strength, structure and amount of hair. Another possibility could be a shortage of iodine in the diet - this may occur if a person doesn't live a reasonably near to the sea or doesn't include fish, shell fish, crabs, etc and/or sea vegetables (seaweeds) in their diets. Japanese females often used to have Hijiki which is a very pleasant thin branch like seaweed in their diets specifically to make their hair long, thick and lustrous. I have tried it and it is really nice - BUT, I was put off continuing with that particular seaweed after finding that there were potential health risks as it is said to contain arsenic and there were red light warnings against it. So you may find that something called sea salad, which is made up of all the mildest of seaweeds and doesn't require either soaking or cooking and can be added to just about every food both hot and cold. Kelp is also good but needs to be avoided if a person has thryroid problems. The other one that is relatively cheap to buy and is mild, needs no soaking or cooking is Nori - this can be purchased in the form of flakes for scattering over food or sheets - (really paper thin) that you can toast or wrap around foods to make a sort of breadless sandwich.

It might be wise to ask your doctor to help with your vitamin D3 levels as we have had rather a poor Summer this year and so even if you are an avid gardener it is probably that you wouldn't be able to top up from our British sunshine.

This is going to sound really silly but dont until blackberry season has finished--humans lose their summer "coat" at this time of year (all hairdressers will attest to the fact that their sinks block quicker at this time of year!). it may be that you have lost extra through being unwell but this is exacerbated by the time of year, hair grows slowly and any recovery will be a long time coming, I hope you get your tresses back.
