Hi Maddy, If I'm totally honest, I take quite a medley of supplements. Some I try to take daily, some once or twice a week, others when I feel I need to. At the moment I am relying on a multi-vitamin and mineral tablet to cover for folic acid requirements they have a total of 27 vitamins, minerals and micronutrients. Added to these I also have cod liver oil capsules, aloe vera tablets, kelp tablets, zinc with C tablets, sulphur msm tablets, B12 1000mcgs, super strength Vitamin B complex, bromelain, extra strengh pro-biotic, magnesium, occasionally cat's claw, devil's claw, sometimes turmuric tablets .. etc then there are a variety of seaweeds also known as sea vegetables. I am currently researching kefir - this is another way to increase the pro-biotics into the body. Some people are suggesting that this also could be a regular good additive.

I think that all of us with coeliac disease are more probably going to be short of micro nutrients. There are many thoughts that may imply that cd sufferers are sometimes inclined to suffer from a leaky gut.

I think much depends on how you are feeling. If a doctor has tested your blood and you are found to be wanting in any of the nutrients we need to take in on a daily basis then it makes sense to take their advice and to add that particular supplement to your daily routine. We are all striving for the best health we can have and sometimes it does mean taking supplements that we wouldn't necessarily probably be taking if we hadn't got cd and we had optimum health.

Yes, it is cd related. Because your guts have been damaged by gluten they cannot absorb all the vitamins etc that your body needs, even if you are eating your 'greens'. The blood test will have shown this.

A lot of coeliacs seem to take a multi-vit, just to make sure that they are getting all they need.

Hi maddy, folic acid is vital for our bodies to absorb iron. This is why pregnant women are often advised to take folic acid.

So I would ask your GP why you are being told to take folic acid and my question is: are you taking iron or mineral supplements? Because if you are it's to help with their absorption. And many coeliac are diagnosed because of anaemia, so there's the link with cd and folic acid.
