15 minutes in the sun, margarine and oily fish much better than tablets as they allow your body to get Vitamin D more naturally...

Hi Ian, I was recommended SunVit D3 supplements, I have low bone density and this apparently helps your body to absorb more of the calcium you eat. Also meant to give you a spring in your step. I must admit after a couple of weeks I do feel like I have more energy so I'll carry on with them. As meaning says though the sun is the best source and with better weather here now just get outside and soak it up.

It's always worth taking additional supplements Ian67 when first diagnosed, as the damage to the stomach usually means that Coeliacs often have very low levels of Vitamin D. In some instances the GP may feel that they levels are low enough to make Vit D injections necessary.

Doctors seem to prefer to prescribe Calcichew D3 Forte as their Vit D supplement. However it is loaded with a number of different sugars which don't agree with some people. If you know these affect you, then go for something that doesn't have this. There are some new high dosage liquid capsules, available on prescription so if you are very deficient and adverse to needles these may be the way.

Hi Ian, I take High Strength Cod Liver Oil capsules - and as others have said try and get out and about or do a little gardening to soak up the sun. Taking further doeses of vitamin D may depend upon where you live as some areas of the country, according to the experts, are better for obtaining higher levels of vitamin D than others. The south probably is the best area and the further north you live the more likelihood will be your requirement for topping up with a little extra vitamin D.

Along with taking cod liver oil we have gone back to cooking with lard, like our parents did. .It's a traditional source of vit D and makes great pastry, using buckwheat flour. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lard

Hi Ian,

I take Adcal from doc, it's a d3 supplement with calcium too. Nice, chewy and a tropical flavour!

It's taken me ages to get my Vit D to increase as I was so severely deficient when diagnosed. I'd recommend seeing your GP. Mine gave me a booster vitamin D injection once a year for 3 yrs and I've now taken colecalciferol capsules on prescription, 6 in total, one to be taken each week. These should boost me unti Aug when my next injection is due. I'll have a blood test before to check if I need it. And yes I do sit in the sun without sunscreen and eat eggs and oily fish. But years of malnourishment from coeliac can take time to improve.

What were your levels when low?

I've got pains in my feet ankles and knees, Is this connected?

I asked for injection but GP said she needs to ask my celiac dr

Thanks everyone

Is it possible to take too much vit D. How do you get results. My doctor dietition will only tell me if she feels I ought to know. The more it is kept from me the more I am interested. Silly but true.

Yes you can have too much. Excessive vitamin D can cause too much Calcium in your blood and if you have liver or kidney problems can exarcerbate those. However I believe it is rare for people to overdose.

Vitamin A is more dangerous to overdose on as it is stored in the liver.

You wee out excess vitamins B and C.
