How are you guys doing with desert? Do you have it occasionally, or everyday, or never?
I’ve gone without sugar for a long time. Then i noticed that it’s ok to have some low fodmap sugar, either table sugar or maple syrup. I’m fond of rice pudding (soy protein milk) but just wondering if it’s ok to have it everyday(a pudding, containing a level tbsp white sugar and 2 tsp of maple syrup) or is it actually catching up with me? Yeah just wondering how you guys are managing it?

Hi Aghu, I love a pudding and tend to go for healthy choices, I also eat a whole food gluten free diet and make all my food from scratch, I don't have weight issues so can enjoy a good pud...😊

Make sure to check that your buckwheat flour is labelled as gluten free, not all of them are. I also make buckwheat pancakes, both savoury and sweet.
I usually have fruit for pudding. Perhaps try different puddings throughout the week, just to make sure you don’t build up an intolerance or overdo the sugar.
I considering using ‘may contain gluten’ flour for buckwheat. I actually think my problem with gluten containing products might have been their fodmap content rather than the gluten.
With sugar.. I have been having it almost every day for weeks now and what i was wondering is if it’s a big no? (I’m a bit off balance, maybe down to that) But then, it’s really not much sugar in it.
Btw, by pudding i meant risotto rice, milk, sugar, maple syrup, cinnamon. Risotto rice well cooked, until it gets all mushy. Otherwise big trouble.
Hi Aghu. Yes, life without desert isn't ok. Unless you have specific food intolerance beyond gluten, I see no reason to limit deserts.
I make a very nice rice pudding with coconut milk. I add some organic honey for sweetness and fresh pod vanilla if I can find it (seems in short supply in even the big shops these days and crazy price). It's pretty rich in terms of fat, but it is a really nice treat. If you can handle cocoa, or some cacao, that will add some chocolate edge to it. I would say add actual GF chocolate but not so sure how GF those actually are.
I'm having to revise my diet at the moment as i think sneaky gluten getting in in the form of GF products that aren't properly GF. Before I use to really like chocolate coconut deserts (I'm also dairy intolerant) from Coconut Collaborative.
If you're ok with milk and cream you should be able to explore some really nice home made desert options. Panacotta looks lovely and has no grains. Lemon polenta cake is lovely, but not sure again how gf polenta really is.
My allergies&intolerances are endless. Having to avoid only gluten would have been easy. Giving up all those breads pasta pizza and all (impossible as it may sound for many) would be a reasonable restriction. Fodmaps, everything that needs to be cut off as a first line measure against ibs(this is a long list on its own), potato(possibly nightshades in general), citrus fruit&kiwi fruit, possibly soy, possibly nuts, dairy (trying lactose free was’t a solution, i’ve drawn the conclusion that it was allergic, perhaps casein, but still insisting on some hard cheeses such as tasty if no more than a thin slice..) and sugar, in itself being a gut irritant, is something I’ll try to cut off alltogether actually. Life is not ok for sure and mixing some cacao into rice pudding is an awsome idea. I do that too.
An allergy to casein, (and other things) can give you tingling in your lips and mouth, a swollen tongue, and hives. If you think you have an allergy it can be seriously dangerous, so you might need to check this out with your doctor.
I should have said intolerance then perhaps, but whatever it is that i’m intolerant to in dairy (aside from lactose), i don’t know that either.
I also don’t know if food allergies can be milder, effecting digestive tract without posing a serious threat. For example, with citrus fruit, a few hours after ingestion i get very itchy eyes, as if pollen allergy, and hours after that (doesn’t happen quick, but next day) - obviously bad absorption as if the guts have been irritated- loose bm follows. Wears off in a couple of days. This seems to be an allergy to me. Perhaps a different case with the dairy. Impossible to get an appoinment from allergy clinic in public hospital. 2 years waiting time. Gp useless.
Your reaction to citrus sounds like it could be an allergy, I find that citrus can affect me at different times of year, seems to tie in with hay fever season for different pollens. If you have an allergic reaction to anything, it tends to get worse each time you are exposed to that thing. Some allergies can be serious, others are just annoying.
Problems with dairy can cause a variety of reactions, in children it has been linked with asthma and rhinitis. Very serious reactions to dairy are rare, but can happen. If dairy is a problem for you, just avoid it or limit it.
Perhaps it’s worth saving up to get some private tests?
Aghu your diet sounds a lot like mine! Luckily gin seems free of all allergens or I'd go mad completely : ) . I'm always reminded of the Little Britain sketch with Marjorie Daws telling her fatties that they can eat as must dust as they like because it's calorie free. Feels like any more elimination and it will just be dust. And gin.
Wow it’s alcohol, it’s against the first line of measures of ibs. What i can go mad with is tuna. But not in oil, i’m probably allergic to sunflower oil, i can’t use olive oil either for some reason. So it needs to be in brine or spring water. I always buy the cheapest supermarket brand and it’s almost pulverized. Then i can’t mix mayo (there isn’t any i can use. Closest was the one with lemon juice concentrate in it) That i’m fearful of too. I can’t use vinegar. That seems to be a no as well. And what a thing of beauty the final result is. It truely is easier to list what i can eat than the other way around.
I’m badly allergic to dust just as to pollen. That’ll be a no.
