Food with high fat/oil content

Addressing to those whose damaged gut is still in the recovery; what’s your experience after ingestion of some fat/oil, such as eating some tuna sandwich without much leaving its sunflower oil out, or eating grilled salmon (usually has high fat), or some grilled chicken thigh etc.

My latest experience; grilled chicken thigh, didn’t chuck out the oil collected on the baking paper, and resulted in me having to go several times next morning and the following hours, obviously poor digestion, too fast transit time and all. Freaked me out of course. Does it add up?

Has your gall bladder been removed? It is what allows the gut to handle large amounts of grease.

Without it, I now get soft poo to diarrhea when I eat something fatty.

If you suspect damage to your gut please have your B12 blood levels checked. Anything less than 400 pg/ml (ng/L) is suspect and may lead to neurological damage in 10% of the population.

No, it hasn’t. I seem to have many intolerances, that send me to the lo way to frequently. After the successive consumption of cauliflower, coconut products, acidic stuff as grapefruit or vinegar... bowel cancer is one of the suspects too btw, i’m just trying to reach some conclusions much as i can. I’ll do what you suggest. Your answer is appreciated.

If you haven’t already please start a logbook of all your food, drink and meds. It takes time for food to travel through the gut - for me it is around 24 hours- so it gets confusing to sort out which food causes the symptoms.

Also symptoms can repeat 24 hours later because the bile (hepatic loop) recycles the bad components that were filtered out by the liver. This time lag just confuses things even more.

If you suspect a specific food item, remove it from your diet for two weeks to completely detoxify your gut and liver and then reintroduce it once and monitor your symptoms over 48 hours.

I had to almost have a constant diet with only foods that I had eliminated and were not the cause of the symptoms.

Slowly experiment by adding single food items.

I found that it was quite often my favorite foods that were the issue and because I ate them frequently I had built up a tolerance. The two weeks without that food item allowed the tolerance to wear off and my body clearly reacted the next time I ate it. For me, it was the dairy in chocolate.

This logbook method does work to identify food, drink or meds because when you get an unexpected symptom you can look back around 24 hours and find a suspect and hopefully the culprit.

Firstly, im so grateful for these responses(likewise for the ones below i’ll answer one by one if need be, before long -im an immigrant guy who has no one around to talk about this dire things- i found out my gluten intolerence which i used to think was my foremost issue(but wasn’t) thanks to someone in ibs forum. So thanks so much)

-I haven’t made a logbook as i’ve always stuck to my safe stuff in my mind. Occasional changes were involved. But i suppose i regularly made mistakes with my safe food too (which i ll later ask, because there’re some pieces that just don’t fall into place)

-the effects of some food has some lag, as you say. Such as Cauliflower (btw, yeah i make a point to follow fodmap, and mostly the usuall suspects matched up accordingly so far),

**but sugar (jam -gluten free, or some fruit such as a simple apple or a dried fruit e.g. fig) throws me off quite quick. Yeah fructose i reckon, but it doesn’t add up much. Anyway, in this case what i wonder is; it sends me to lo so fast (way below 12 hours or so, which is the limit for diarrhea) but it’s not d. So it must be causing some reaction so that the gut throws the ideal gastrointestinal transit time out the window and the food from my previous ingestions are being affected. (This may be the subject for another headline though)

Possibly IBS? Perhaps have a look at FODMAP foods, as these may be the cause if you are having problems with some vegetables.

My insides cannot cope with the fat from chicken but am fine with grilled salmon. Different fats can have different effects in the stomach.

Also have a look at probiotics and prebiotics, if you haven’t already, as these can help with gut repair.

Grilled samon is not nearly as bad, i’ll give it a try again soon. I’ll try preb and prob, suggestions from those who has ibs-d are welcome.

I just recently made a potential mistake which was eating these slightly undercooked (oven grilled) thigh meat. And i poured all its juice and oil and stuff on to the rice, i wonder like crazy now if that was what threw me off ( more than a couple of days later its effect’s just wearing off ) does it make sense?

Undercooked meat and its juices are very likely to make you ill.

Ive got exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) which means I don't produce enough enzymes to digest food, especially fat, and produces the symptoms you describe. EPI is associated with CD. I am also being tested for bile acid malabsorption. Might be worth getting tested for these?
