my son was diagnosed with fatty liver diagnosed last summer . He is a vegetarian and was 50 pounds overweight . With the help of Ozempic and strict eating protocol he has lost that 50 pounds With fatty liver you are not supposed to drink alcohol .Wouldca couple ogbglasses on week end nights really do much harm . With a crazy busy work schedule a glass or two couldn't do much harm ,hopefully.

Any thoughts?

Hi Darcy2000! First, congratulations to your son on losing the weight - that’s a real achievement.

Your son really needs to talk to his doctor about drinking alcohol, especially if he’s finding it hard to give it up. If he’s been told to stop drinking, an internet forum can’t give permission to go against medical advice.

That said, I have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, so I’ve had to learn a bit about drinking and a damaged liver. In the UK, recommended limits for alcohol are calculated in units, to make it easier to compare drinks. The recommended limit is 14 units a week, but a large glass of wine or a pint of beer can be three units - so a couple of glasses two nights a week and you could already be close to the limit for a healthy person; three nights (or three glasses) and you could be over it - not a good idea if your liver is already damaged.

It’s also worth mentioning that alcoholic drinks can be quite high in calories - not helpful if he wants to keep that weight lost!

This probably isn’t the answer you were hoping for, but there are many more low and no alcohol drinks available these days, and it’s much more socially acceptable to avoid alcohol, at least in the UK, so not drinking is easier than it’s ever been. And please, do encourage your son to talk to either his liver specialist or gp, and get some proper medical advice, tailored for his needs. All the best!
