SULPHITES

I was diagnosed by endoscopy in 1999 after years of being told I had IBS and eating masses of Rennies daily. My gut is v sensitive and recently I feel much better for not eating GF baked goods or drinking wine I am pretty sure this is because I am getting rid of sulphites from my diet, has anyone else had a similar experience?

Hi Shamrocks

I definitely find that eating gf baked goods makes me feel unwell, so I avoid them, including ready-made bread. There are so many additives like emulsifiers, gums, cellulose that can upset your stomach. I’m not sure about the sulphite content, I’ll have to look it up.

I’m ok with wine now, but had real problems during the menopause. The sulphites in wine seem to disagree with a lot of people.

I have a skin allergy to sulphites, so need to limit them in my diet. They are in a lot of things though.

If you want to test whether it's the sulphites, you can often find them in dried fruit (like apricots) so you could maybe eat a couple of those to see if you get symptoms? So many ingredients in shop cake, it's hard to know which is the problem.

Sulphites are in it seems to me almost everything powder/flourish even spices, all bought breads but esp GF baked goods, it amazes me that people who don't have to would choose to eat a gluten free product made for the most part with preservatives rather than real whole grain , sulphites make me look and feel bloated.
