Colon Cleanse/ Salt Flush - after effects??

Hi all

New here!

I'll jump straight in - I did a salt water cleanse saturday AM. I initially added 2 heaped teaspoons of non-iodised sea salt crystals to 1 litre of warm water, chugged it down in 1, then nothing happened for a while, so I added another teaspoon or so to speed things up.

I panicked about excess salt intake and drank more water to dilute out. In all I probably ingested 4 heaped teaspoons of salt to 2 litres of water (1 of which was cold).

The flush did its thing and I felt quite energised, probably from the salt. I followed up later that day with kefir, sauerkraut, probiotic yoghurt and healthy whole foods - which I've repeated every day since.

I've also taken electrolyte salts and drank coconut water to replenish.

I'm just feeling wiped out and lacking energy, not sleeping quite as well, generally stressed, mentally foggy, slightly headachey from time to time - I feel noticeably worse than before the flush, possible reasons:

Detox reaction?

Decimation of good gut flora - which now have to recolonize from zero?

Electrolyte disruption?

Hormonal balance (pituitary / diuretic signalling to kidneys - because as soon as a drink water, its on its way out again within 30 mins).

Excess salt has jacked up my adrenals and/or high BP?

The other confounding factor is that I was taking an antidepressant. As levels of the drug build up in the body over several weeks to therapeutic level, there is a chance I've flushed a lot of the medication out of my system suddenly.

Any pointers or opinions/similar experiences?

So what made you think you would feel better, after doing that to your body? "Detox" is unscientific and potentially dangerous. We already have perfectly good mechanisms for ridding the body of toxins, it's called our liver and kidneys.

That's a good point my friend... doesn't mean you are correct though.

there a lot of toxins including medications, environmental toxins and byproducts like xenoestrogens from plastics/bottled water that stay lodged within the body - lipids, liver and kidneys especially, impairing the natural detox.

That's part of the reason why I did it but thanks for your constructive input and all the best to you.

That sounds like a lot of salt and water for your kidneys to cope with in a short space of time. If your symptoms carry on, perhaps talk to a health professional.

Your gut flora should be ok, although it might have been altered.
