Since I have been on Gluten free diet I have been feeling a lot better as the months have progressed. I have now developed a very dry mouth especially through the night and need to drink fluids a lot more. Has anybody else had this experience ? I have had a blood test for thyroid and I am borderline for low thyroid . I am not on medication for thyroid as yet because I am borderline , but have sore joints and have put on wieght.

Are you on any meds? Could they be causing it? Also have you been tested for diabetes, excessive thirst is often a symptom. Do mention this new symptom to your gp you never know there might be a simple solution.

Thanks for reply. I am on vitamin A tablets only. I have mentioned it to doc but with no outcome. I am going to local chemist to get diabetes test on Monday. Hopefully I don't get a positive result !

I don't know if this is at all helpful but in my 'Coeliac for Dummies' book it lists Sjogren's Sydrome as a reason for both inability to produce saliva and also joint pains. It is an autoimmune disease and if you have Coeliac Disease apparently it is also possible to have other autoimmune diseases linked in with it. Might be worth asking your Dr?

As soon as you wrote "dry mouth" I thought diabetes. No dry mouth here, quite the opposite, over productive saliva.

Putting on weight is good news. Shows your well. Medics love that you have increased weight. Problem is it will be a spare tyre. Not where you want it :-)

Sore joints might be temporary. Gremlin infecting joints. Hope pain subsides.

When I started a gluten free diet years ago, the first thing I noticed was how dry it all is! If you look at bread mixes (like Helens) it says don't add anything - it will be too dry. Eating ordinary foods there's no problem, but as soon as you start the GF stuff you need oceans to drink! It could be the gluten replacement that takes more liquid from your body.

The only other time I'm almost showing symptoms of Sjorgens is when OH decides we need candles - then I end up with dry eyes, nose mouth ..... and it's nearly that time of year again!

Stay away from paraffin and para* if the candles hurt you. Oil lamps, some machine oils, most shampoos even high end ones, many skin care products (preservative), plugin room deodorizers (most use paraffin as a solvent/carrier) dry my eyes right out, ChapStick, many lipsticks, some make-up.

I end up using dandruff shampoo just because it doesn't have preserative para waxes in it.

Buy some bees wax candles and see if you tolerate that.

Thanks. I do avoid them and haven't bought makeup in an attempt to mimic Eddie Izard - it always looks wrong with the stubble :-)

Hi. I'm new to this site as of today. As soon as I read "dry Mouth" I thought of Sjogren's Syndrome. Have had this horrible complaint for 30 years. Watch for dry eyes too. I found using Moisturising Gel in my mouth at night is helpful and sugar-free gum during the day. I can't sit down to a meal without a glass of water because I have difficulty swallowing. Hope you get some answers soon.
