Amoy Rice noodles

Hi everyone. Any idea whether these noodles -lavelled as gluten free- can do any harm? The "suspicious" ingredient is BARLEY AMYLASE

Hi Angelias, Barley amylase is like barley malt and it could well be within codex but I can't believe that it won't contain traces of gluten.

Barley malt is tested for gluten using one of the ELISA wheat gluten test and one over estimates the gluten content and the other under estimates the gluten content.

Some own brand malted cornflakes are classed as OK for coeliac and will appear on a supermarkets food list of gluten food but still say contains barley malt and gluten on the allergy labelling.

Some coeliac are much more sensitive than others and some can tolerate barley malt and malt vinegar but some of us have a bad reaction to it so I personally wouldn't touch it. Yet alone eat it LOL...

I would contact Amoy customer service and see what they say but my moneys is on it being codex gluten free rather than devoid of gluten.

Thats my 2p's worth and if you do contact Amoy please let us know their response.

Ps there's a similar thread on Celiac.com and the last reply is very informative:

Thank you Jerry. I think I will have to keep far from it, as it looks like I am quite sensitive to codex as well. This product is labelled as gluten free and suitable for coeliacs, but the ingredient "BARLEY" amylase is in bold...quite confusing...

Hi again, It is confusing and I found this, it is an application for exemption labelling for barley amylase to the EFSA:

efsa.europa.eu/en/efsajourn...

Now it says here that it tested at 3.1mg per Kg which is 3.1ppm of gluten so it is like wheat derivatives like maltodextrin which the EFSA say are usually >3.5ppm

So I think that this explains why it says barley amylase and gluten free.

The interesting paragraph is the conclusion which says it is gf as long as it's below codex and OK for coeliac but it could have an adverse reaction on someone who is allergic to barley.

I wish that they wouldn't add allowed levels of gluten to otherwise gf foods. And I wish that gluten free meant none of the forbidden grains and undetectable gluten. Because what I find off putting is the EFSA think that wheat derivatives are safe for coeliac because they are unlikely to cause a severe reaction...maybe some of us don't want a reaction.

I suggest you ring Coeliac UK because what is on the net is confusing

Hi Angelias,

I would think it will all depend on your level of sensitivity. I can get away with a small amount of malt vinegar but I would be very suspicious of malt amylase. It is what you get when 'mash' barley for brewing.

Instead, why not get plain ordinary rice noodles? I like curried flavoured noodles and I use Pataks Madras Paste. You could put in any flavour you like using anything from stockcubes to Bovril.

I believe that as a Coeliac you have to think out of the box when it comes to food. I don't even bother with the usual fast foods as they are full of gluten or other toxic rubbish. My wife makes me all sorts of stuff, from Fritatas to Boston Baked Beans. And I am particularly fond of oat flapjacks. Then she complains I'm getting fat! Quelle surprise!
