Don't go gluten free before your blood test or you may not get an accurate result.
Hi,
I agree with Penel, it's a really bad idea to go gluten-free before you've had the blood test.
My understanding is that it's much easier if you stay on a gluten diet until you've had your test results.
Reintroducing gluten just for a test is often a minefield of new problems and could make you feel sicker than you are right now.
If there are any other GPs in your practice, it may be appropriate to get a second opinion on when you can have a coeliac blood test.
Good luck.
Why do you want to go gluten free? It's of no benefit unless you can't tolerate gluten.
I disagree. I can tolerate gluten, and coeliac testing came back negative. I am hypothyroid, and many people with thyroid problems feel better on a gluten-free diet, so I decided to give it a try.
I discovered within about five days of going g-f that my dreadful hair-trigger temper and problems with unjustifiable rage had practically vanished. I also had a problem with staggering too much. No cause or solution had ever been found, and so I just kept on staggering. Going g-f didn't fix the problem but it reduced it enormously. I've since discovered that taking high dose methylcobalamin has reduced the staggering even further.
I'm not saying my experience means that everyone should give up gluten. But some people who try it might get some unexpected and surprising benefits.
Personally, I hate being g-f. I hoped my experiment would show no benefits. Then I would have heaved a sigh of relief and gone back to eating anything I wanted. But, I've been g-f about a year now, and I still keep it up. I know when I get glutened by accident now because I start staggering and my temper flares up terribly.
P.S. Oh, and another thing - I started absorbing my iron supplements a lot better too, once I went g-f.
As a general rule of thumb, a gluten free diet is NOT a healthier diet than gluten one, unless you have adverse affects due to gluten.
The GF industry has gone mainstream, there and ten's of thousands of people on GF diets who really don't need to be. In fact GF bread, pasta etc calorie content is horrific compared to "normal" versions.
My point was unless you have a problem with eating gluten there is no reason you should consider cutting it out of your diet.
Jamie Oliver has lots of gluten free recipe's online, you don't need to pay for just google it. Nigella also has good recipe's for buns and cakes etc.
libraries are full of books for all diets,
keep eating gluten if you want a test with accurate result
nigella s clementine cake and the chocolate version as well are delicious
For cooking, just use a normal cookbook and substitute the flour. I agree with everyone, you must maintain a gluten containing diet until the tests as otherwise you will get a negative result.
However I also believe that being gluten free helps those not known to be coeliac. The year I made a completely gluten free Christmas dinner, everyone commented on how less bloated they felt, and I can tell when my partner has had gluten as he becomes a lot more 'gassy'.
This style of diet is hard to stick to but it definitely makes a difference to a lot of people coeliac, intolerant, or not.
I hello all thank you for replies ive already had coliac test when i was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 2.5 years ago it was negative then. Ive sadly suffered a misscarriage this year so it maybe thats why my ferritin is very low but doctor who i spoke too was intrigued as too why my low ferritin hadnt been investigated before and suggested it could be c d. Im not fully sure of all symptons but i bloat really easily and struggle too lose any weight even doing fasting. I will try too get docs appointment this coming week too request the test earlier. Thanks again
Hi, I do not have Celiac however I have Fibromyalgia for around 25 years and now osteo arthritis and severe painful knees which are missing cartilage, and for 7 months even sleeping and turning over was more than my knees could stand, I did my own research and chose to give up gluten (I still have food in which contains gluten and I cannot financially justify throwing food away.
However I feel you have nothing to lose by reducing it and then giving up, the difference in my own health has been amazing, I take Organic Turmeric with Bioperine which helps body absorb it.
I never ever have been one to self diagnose however results of MRI s have shown what I have, so I chose to research and read and read.
Gluten including whole wheat has been slowly damaging our bodies, so do what you can to help yourself, my Rheumatologist could not believe my difference, however she refused to add to my notes that I take pure organic turmeric as anti-inflammatory and no prescribed medications.
All the best for you.
