Preventable Corneal Abrasion

Recently I went to a recycling centre on a windy day.

I usually wear eye protection glasses but had forgotten to put them in the car.

Within 5 minutes some dust had blown into my 'good eye' and it was very painful.

Everyone was busy shaking out bags briskly all around me.

Luckily I was not driving but in the town I visited a( rare) grumpy optician. Walking along with the injured eye closed I then twisted my ankle in a gully. The optician said I would have to go to A&E where everyone was very kind. I was given some antibiotic gel and told that I had a large corneal abrasion.

Vision was poor for about a week but now seems back to normal. My ankle still needs support but is much improved. The worry about future vision was the worst thing.

This has been a warning to myself and my husband to keep two pairs of eye protection glasses always available in the car( as we are currently sorting out some old sheds and regularly recycling). Now it has become a habit to wear eye protection most of the time I am doing gardening and outside cleaning .

If this may help prevent even one person damaging an eye then it will be well worth it.

Makes absolute sense. I'm guilty of gardening with just my ordinary glasses on. This is a cautionary story. Thanks and I hope you make a speedy, complete recovery. Take care.

Thanks for the advice, hope you’re fully recovered soon. Where do you get your eye protection glasses from?

Hello buzzbee2,

Thank you I am feeling so much better and back to normal duties!

We searched Amazon for some new safety glasses as ours were old and a bit cloudy. There is a big choice , some singles and packs, glasses and goggles ,we bought some sold by PIANTON and supplied by Amazon , a pack of 12 at £15. These have bits of soft plastic on the bridge of the nose and behind the ears to prevent them slipping. We also bought some cloth pouches so they will hopefully help prevent scratches.

The goggles are OK for very dusty environments but I find they do tend to steam up so that I need to keep clearing them.

Best wishes
