Hello,l too have primary angle closure with no glaucoma. My eye pressure had been 19/21 in both eyes for the past 30 years which is classed as just within normal range, then when I went for my yearly eye test last June my pressure had gone up to 28 in both eyes,l was then referred urgently to hospital where I was told I had primary angle closure and was advised to have iridotomy which I had in August. I was worried sick about having it done but I can tell you it was completely painless and over in about 5 minutes. At my 4 week checkup my pressures were down to 23 I am now on Fixapost drops to try to get it down lower

My journey started at the opticians too.My eyesight is very bad.Had Borderline pressure 2 years ago.I had headaches so went to get an eye test pressure 24/23 got referred to opthamology. Was so scared yesterday I was shaking.Anxiety not helping my eye pressure. With having low blood pressure and tachycardia I'm concerned about the drops they use.Being investigated by Endocrinology for high cortisol but not seeing them until April. I believe they use steroid drops afterwards. I also have liver issues so I'm concerned drops will affect that too.Opthamology aren't worried said it can be treated. Not worrying easier said than done

After the iridotomy I was on steroids drops for 6 weeks but we are all different so you may not be on them for so long. When are you having it done.

I have had the SLT procedure and if it is anyway similar to the one you are having then I can tell you it is completely pain free and takes a few minutes on each eye. I was on steroid drops for 5 days after which are just like any other drop in the way they are administered and feel. Just feels like a drop of water in the eye.

I’ve had both and iridotomy is shorter and easier to have done. 😀 but similar

I had acute angle closure, where the angles completely close and the pressure goes sky high. My pressures were 71 and 69 and I almost lost my sight. I had laser iridotomy in both eyes and can confirm it’s almost painless. The worst I had was a really bad headache brought in by the dilating drops they give you in advance. This is a known side effect and it went in about an hour. Take some paracetamol with you to the hospital in case this happens. The procedure was a complete success and I’m told my angles are now so wide there is no physical way I could get angle closure again. I did have an issue with the steroids afterwards where the pressure went up in one eye and they had to stop them. But all was good. Pilocarpine seems an odd choice of drop given all those available and your other issues but I’m sure the ophthalmologist knows what they are doing. What I would say though is if you feel it’s making any of your other issues worse, contact your consultant right away as there are other meds you can have (I’ve probably had most of them at one point or another over the last two years). Try not to worry (hard I know), it’s a short almost painless process that has a high success rate. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Why do you think Pilocarpine isn't suitable? They said it's to keep my narrow angles open.Been told after the procedure they check your pressure after a hour. What if it goes up after the hour???

I’m no doctor but pilocarpine seems to have side effects at that impact the cardiovascular system. I’m sure they considered it and I guess you won’t be taking them for long as the iridotomy will open your angles. If you get acute angle closure that’s really bad news, trust me, I know! So it’s probably a risk assessment given the short time you are taking them. If your pressure goes up after an hour it’s really no problem. They will give you Iopidine drops and Acetazolamide for a couple of days. Mine went up to 36 after SLT (a similar but different laser procedure) and that’s what I had. No problems and the pressures went straight back down. They check after an hour so they can treat you if necessary. Don’t worry, this is a common procedure with almost zero risk and can save your sight. Take care x

I have tachycardia but they say my heart is fine. Opthamologist said its a preventative measure.Apparantley I have small eyes. The info sheet I was issued with frightened me a bit it said blindness it may not work its can change your vision halos etc but I guess they wouldn't be doing it unless they thought I needed it

I think pilocarpine is only given for a short time ,it brings pressure down quickly.l was on it for 2weeks before iridotomy then was put on Monopost

They haven't mentioned any drops afterwards. How did the iridotomy go?

Lizzyanne567 in reply toPaula1710

I had my iridotomy last August all went well no pain but I am still on drops because my pressure hasn't come down as much as it should so I have been on different drops to see which works best.but we are all different you may not need drops afterwards

Fingers crossed 🤞 I don't.They all seem to have alot of nasty side effects. Have alot of allergies Drops I'm on now give me headaches.Told to stop them a couple of days before the laser treatment

hi Paula don’t be scared the laser treatment is fine, nothing at all to worry about, it has certainly worked for my eye pressure. Along with the Dorzolamide drops morning and night, also Tiopex once a day.
