Tube surgery

Hello. I am a new member.

Last Thursday I had Baerveldt tube surgery to my left eye. Still some blurring and discomfort from the stitches and the eye is watery. There was scar tissue to remove from previous surgery. I saw my consultant the following day and he wasn't surprised when I told him I had some double vision. Can anyone please tell me if they have also had double vision following tube surgery and whether it was temporary or permanent.

Many thanks.

Hi hollyberry3

I haven't had that procedure myself. But i just wanted to say hi and welcome to the group.

After my procedures my eye did go blurry. It wasn't exactly double vision though.

Do you have another appointment due so that you can ask the ophthalmologist ? If they weren't surprised you've got double vision then maybe it's to be expected but temporary ?

I hope this improves soon for you because that must be quite difficult.

Best wishes

Hi Hollyberry3, I haven't had that procedure but hopefully someone who has will reply soon. I have had 2 trabs and after the second my pressure was too low and I couldn't see at all and then as the pressure started to rise my vision was very blurry for quite a few weeks. After about a month my vision was back to normal so fingers crossed this will be the same with your double vision. The fact your consultant wasn't surprised makes me think it's probably something that does happen. Definitely ask him at your next check up to put your mind at rest. I took paracetamol for the discomfort caused by the stitches and it certainly helped.

I hope your eyes feel better soon .

Hi Hollyberry3, I had Baerveldt tube surgery in both eyes at the beginning of 2020 and I did experience double vision after the procedures. I believe that this is quite common because of the way the surgery impacts on the muscles around your eye. I did not experience double vision all the time. It was much worse when I was trying to focus on distant objects and I never noticed it inside my home. It was definitely worse when I was tired. Two years on I no longer get double vision at all but I would say that I went on experiencing it for about 18 months on and off.

Hi, I had the same surgery two weeks ago and was told that double-vision is a common side-effect which usually resolves with time. I hope your recovery is going well. All the best.

Hi, I had a Baerveldt tube implant in 2019, and I have had double vision since. I also had excessive scarring (from a previous Sclerectomy) so my consultant had to put the tube implant in a different position to usual. I have prisms in my glasses to help correct for the double vision. It is manageable unless I am tired - evenings can sometimes be tricky for reading and watching TV! I think double vision is quite a common side effect of a tube implant, but your op was very recent so things could improve with time as your eye muscles recover. Good luck :)
