Loss of central vision after starting to use Latanoprost

Hi everyone - great to find this community. I have been trying to find if anyone has had a similar experience to me. I have had high myopia since I was a child. Think I am about -13 to -14. My main issue started in 2008 when the cataract in my left eye thickened considerably. I then had cataracts removed in both eyes however in my left eye, the lens "moved" giving me double vision in that eye - only intermittent so I chose to live with it. In Oct 2021 the wonky lens in the left eye chose to move completely into my eye and I had a victrectomy to recover it and stitch it into place in March 2022. On the day I was discharged from followup, I got a detached retina in that same left eye. I then had another surgery to fix the detached retina , remember being on an IOP drop but it wasn't Latanoprost and I was fine. At the end of July would say my vision was as good as it was ever going to get. I didn't notice any loss of central vision then. I then had follow up for continual IOP - I had been hovering in the early to mid twenties for some years. Finally in Nov 2022 I was diagnosed with Glaucoma and started on Latanoprost on 07.11.2022. Right from the start I had quite nasty eye pain in my left eye that continued for about a fortnight. I went back to the hospital but they told me to persevere with Latanoprost as it was working for the pressure. Over Christmas just past i noticed I had lost central vision in my left eye, I could still see colours but no detail. I went back to hospital and was told there was swelling in the blood vessels in the retina and I was given what I was told would be the first in a series of monthly injections to try to reduce the swelling. I asked whether the Latanoprost caused it but wasn't directly answered. Has anyone heard of Latanoprost causing anything similar to this? All replies much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi Ginger, I'm sorry to hear of your struggles...I'm no glaucoma specialist but in my humble opinion I don't think it's the Latanoprost. Many of us are on that and I've never heard of that being a causatory factor. Either it's the blood vessel situation that's caused it or it's the glaucoma. What kind of glaucoma do you have? Is Latanoprost enough to bring the pressures down, or should they be adding another drop? Next time you go, be prepared with the questions you need answers to - I find it helps to write them down beforehand and don't leave the chair until you get the answers you need! Knowledge is power, and knowing what we're dealing with invariably makes us feel better rather than being in a fog of uncertainty. Good luck going forward.

Thank you so much - yes, indeed. Will write my questions down and make sure I get the answers. So good to find this forum and not to feel alone with these issues. Take care.

yes, I believe it is the latanoprost. I went through the same exact thing! Injections to reduce the swelling but never fully correcting the problem. After a year, I went to a new retinal specialist to get a second opinion. He had me stop the latanoprost and after a month, my swelling was gone and vision fully recovered to 20/20! It is so scary that my first retinal specialist made the wrong diagnosis. Now I always get a second opinion. Please let me know if this solves your problem.

Thank you Floaters. Found your comments very interesting. Are you using another substitute for the Latanoprost to reduce IOP?

currently on Cosopt PF. After, the latanoprost, it was trial and error with different drops. Latanoprost is effective at reducing pressure but not worth the 20/40 vision.

Hi Ginger, I was recently diagnosed with swelling at the back of the eye, causing blurred vision, but as a side effect of cataract surgery ( I'm not taking latanoprost in that eye ). It's improving with drops. A quick Google found some articles about latanoprost causing this kind of condition. I know it can be misleading to take articles from Google and apply them to yourself but at least it shows it's worth asking your doctor again. Would there be an alternative you could try to see if it makes a difference? All the best! Changes in vision can be very worrying.

Hi Iona57. Thanks for this. Yes, will definitely be asking about a substitute and look have a look for those Google articles you have mentioned.

Hello Ginger30.

Glaucoma drops, whatever the type will not cause sight loss.

As there is history of a detached retina in your left eye, the problems you mention are more likely to be related to the problems you experienced in the past.

I have just looked at the PIL for Latanoprost and it does mention under the rare side effects that it may cause swelling of the retina. Due to your past history of a detached retina, it would be worth speaking to the consultant as to whether this drop is the best one for you. If you are not due to see him soon, you can call the eye secretary with your concerns. They can check with the consultant and get back to you.

If you are still taking the Latanaprost, dont stop, as it will be controlling your eye pressure, but to check with the consultant regarding the side effects.

Thank you Trish - yes, I am preparing a list of questions for my visit on 13.02.2023. It is hard for people my age to speak up as I was brought up to believe doctors were gods and always knew best. It's great to live in an age where we can use the internet to educate ourselves and ask questions. As I guess everyone on this forum knows, we only get two eyes and the aim is to maximise what sight we have. Thanks again.

Trish , since it is a rare side effect, do you think that is why my first retinal specialist missed this diagnosis? I am still coming to grips that I went through a year of needless injections because this possibility was overlooked. I value your opinion!

This isnt something I could answer, But it is definately something you can discuss with your consultant.
