Hello,

First time on the forum.

Just wondered if anyone has had SLT laser for glaucoma recently? As my mother will be having this procedure shortly and she would like to know what it's like and any feedback good or bad about it.

Thanks.

Hi Lionella, I’ve had both eyes lasered. I found it ok, very slightly uncomfortable but nothing to worry about. The only thing I didn’t like were all the drops afterwards for a week, however, the week passed quickly. I hope all goes well for your Mother. 😊

Yes, both done at the same time. My vision was slightly blurred to begin with but after about 5 minutes everything was back to normal. I wore sunglasses afterwards as it was a very bright day, however, they were worn only until I got home.

Hello Lionella, I have had SLT a number of times, most recently in the last month. As carnationmac has said, it might be slightly uncomfortable, but the numbing drops have always made it painless for me. Some places give you steroid drops to take for a week after, but with my most recent session they only wanted me to take benzalkonium chloride drops if the eyes became painful in the days following. As I understand it the aim is that the healing of the trabecular mesh work after the laser promotes better aqueous drainage through that channel leading to lower pressures. This time without steroid drops, I found my eyes sensitive to sunlight for about 4 days following. Depending upon the type of glaucoma they may offer to do 180 degrees or the full 360 degrees of the mesh work. My past treatment has been for the 180, but this time round I had 360 done in 2 appointments a week apart and the results have been better. Final point it can take up to 2 months for the full pressure lowering benefit to come through if the treatment works for the person.

thanks for this information. Very informative. My biggest fear is they turn round and say well it's your age etc. and it makes no difference at all. Especially as it lasts for only a few years. My mother is over 70. I

Hi please read my post on slt valfrance.I had slt done in march it is now 12 weeks. I would recommend it. My pressure was 28 in January, at that time I was taking monoprost. They then gave me a beta blocker and I did not react well to it.Although my pressure did come down to 17 18. I went on an alpha agonist however that did not bring my pressure down enough. I then had SLT, I went for another test today and it was 19 in both eyes and I am really pleased. I am only taking monoprost. I have changed my lifestyle also with food, stopped smoking, no coffe and no saturated fat also. fingers crossed it carries on working, it has helped me to avoid taking 2 drugs. good luck to your mum and I hope it works. valfrance

Thanks so much for sharing your story. It's just unknown territory so really helpful to learn others experiences. I really hope it does the trick. Fingers crossed. Did they laser both eyes at the same time?
